I was digging around at the back of a cupboard today and came across a few old VHS tapes. I decided to have a quick look at what they contained, and was surprised to find some old BBC News bulletins. I've captured them and uploaded them for you all to enjoy.

The first is a daytime summary bulletin from 1989 with Lisa Davidson:

BBC News - Daytime Summary 1989

Second, we have the opening of a Christmas Day bulletin with Jill Dando, also from 1989:

BBC News - Christmas Day 1989

I also came across a full Virtual Era bulletin -- a Saturday late evening bulletin with Peter Sissons from 1996. I shall upload that tomorrow.

I don't have much, to offer, got a Nine O'Clock News opening from 1995/6, though there's nothing special. But I do have a BBC One handover to BBC News 24 at 1.40am on the first Tuesday night after N24 launched, with Jane Hill, I should also have the 2.00am and 3.00am countdowns too, though I'll do those tomorrow, but if anyone's interested just ask.

I'd be very interested in seeing that Nine O'clock News bulletin if you can upload it. Even though the Saturday one I'll do tomorrow is the same format (the weekend late bulletins used to use the Nine's look and music), it'd be good to see what other stories were knocking about back then.

I'll upload both open and close of the Saturday bulletin tomorrow. The close features the late Helen Rollason reading the sports news.

Excellent uploads. Incidentally, does anyone know what the newsroom behind the presenters is now used for?

Can you post a still of the Lisa Davidson bulletin? Simply because I can't remember what the hell she looks like!!

For some reason, I cannot open the link from my desk. Damn.

I would like to see a clip of the almost forgotton about 1985 - 1988 Nine O'Clock news titles (the fish-fingers) if anyone has it in good quality! Smile

I loved the music to that and of course Patrick Lunt's brilliant voiceovers at the start!

Jesus, I had no idea that it was Patrick Lunt who did those voiceovers. You are correct, Equidem, they were brilliant.

Patrick was, of course, long term newsreader and continuity announcer on BBC Radio (2 mainly), as well as being married to Jan Leeming!! Where is he now?

I think Patrick still does occasional stints on Radio 2. He also does voiceovers.

I'm glad everybody is enjoying the clips.

Here's the Virtual Era bulletin I mentioned last night. Apologies for the jumps in the audio in the intro clip -- it's like that on the VHS tape, unfortunately.

Hope you enjoy them. I loved that studio, especially when it was set up for the Nine/Weekend bulletins. It looked fabulous. Much better than what we have now.

James -- I've deleted the original MPEG file I captured with Lisa Davidson on. I'll dig the tape out again later and capture a picture for you. Hope that's OK.

Appreciate it. Many thanks. Good to see Helen Rollason, above. She was a friendly face for the camera, with those cat's eyes! Sorely missed.

In fact, old Sissons doesn't look too bad either in those caps. Wish he was back on mainstream news.
