I loved the 2007 graphics at the time. They'd look completely out of place now given that visual design has mostly migrated towards flat minimalism, which is a very good thing overall.

The 2008 set was a massive retrograde step, it looked so clunky and unpolished in comparison. I much prefer the 2013 evolution, which is really how it should have looked from day one.

And I don't want to start a Gill Sans vs Helvetica debate but Gill is so impractical for rolling news graphics. Remember how awfully they used to condense long text to get it to squash onto a one-line strap? Eugh.

The squash onto one line was due to how the straps were built and designed rather than the font. Now, instead of squashing, the font reduces in size.

That could, and should, have been the way it worked before too.

I, perhaps wrongly, assumed both methods had been tried and the squashed method proved more legible? Because it looked awful and the fix seemed obvious. I personally find Helvetica easier to read in smaller sizes.

Pleased it was changed eventually anyway!

My personal favourite era of BBC News 24 was 2007-2008, particularly the countdown, the set and those lovely graphics which were replaced by rather drab and plain ones in 2008 (ahead of their time, you could say).

Agree - much preferred the swirl era which was evolving nicely to the rehash of the 1999 look which followed. Never understood why BBC News introduced the box at a time it was seemingly being phased out on other channels.

One small problem with that 07 08 look was it kinda ruined that one programme that started this whole debate in the first place, The World Today. In fact that whole refresh worked a lot better for News 24 then it did for World.

It didn't work for World at all, the titles were wrong as well it said BBC World from BBC News, when it was the other way round.

I really loved BBC News music between 2003-2008. Particularly the countdowns.

Ditto.

Love this countdown with its opening sound effects:

Early 2000s had some great themes:

This will always be in my opinion the best...

Does anyone have a video of the original cut of the 2005 countdown, the overkill on that really cut on the beat (lots of cuts on the drums of the satellites at TVC were very prominent)

Was there ever an explanation for why that went all purply at the end? Some attempt to make it blend with the mainly blue of the studio?

The BBC World One was much better imho, perfectly executed.
