It should also be noted that between 2004 and 2007 the program had one of the best openings on any program BBC News has produced even to this day. Just listen to that headline bed.

I really loved BBC News music between 2003-2008. Particularly the countdowns.

My personal favourite era of BBC News 24 was 2007-2008, particularly the countdown, the set and those lovely graphics which were replaced by rather drab and plain ones in 2008 (ahead of their time, you could say).

The best News 24 countdown will always be 1999, of course.

I agree with that. Although I do like the 2008 graphics, the only thing I really dislike is the box logo, and really the fact that 'NEWS' is much larger than 'BBC'. I've never understood that. Surely 'BBC' is just as important in the name as 'NEWS'?

Yes - fantastic graphics which were very short-lived. One of my favourite countdowns is the 2005 countdown.

Weren't these the first graphics to use VizRT? But with the White/Red re-launch across the networks/regions, the graphics were re-designed so they could be implemented in the various CGs around the regions - most of which couldn't support 3D and/or animation?

I think the 2007-2008 look was fantastic for BBC News 24 and World, but I actually really liked the 2005-07 version of the clamshell for the One, Six and Ten more than what replaced it.

I think it was a lot more elegant and refined, and the transition with the globe unfolding out to reveal the studios is really nicely done.

I hated that look. The clamshell meant nothing. Also there was too much black used, far too dark and depressing. Prefer the white.

I'm glad it's not just me who thought that. To my eyes, the black era was variously too flat (earlier incarnations) and too glossy (the later version). It always felt cheap to me - lacking the texture, polish and sophistication of the 1999 red/cream era (although I accept that the cream was starting to date!).

I've also never been wild about the switch from Gill Sans to Helvetica. Yes, Helvetica is very functional, and has many desirable properties. But it lacks a distinctive quality.

I loved the 2007 graphics at the time. They'd look completely out of place now given that visual design has mostly migrated towards flat minimalism, which is a very good thing overall.

The 2008 set was a massive retrograde step, it looked so clunky and unpolished in comparison. I much prefer the 2013 evolution, which is really how it should have looked from day one.

And I don't want to start a Gill Sans vs Helvetica debate but Gill is so impractical for rolling news graphics. Remember how awfully they used to condense long text to get it to squash onto a one-line strap? Eugh.
