Just to be clear - there is no issue with outside sources being able to connect in to NBH. No particular studio is broken. The issue is that anything that wasn’t routed before BNCS went down - whether that’s an incoming source or a studio to a network can’t be changed. IFB / cue / return audio can’t be sent back to the correct place.

Radio has been badly affected as well as news output.

Presumably this explains being able to cross to Salford for Sports news. I’m guessing it’s an almost, if not permanent, outside source to at Studio E at the least.

Which might give them a few options, routing contributions via Salford into E?

Oh, so even if BNCS is down, you can't make a local recording of an interview within that studio, to a PC that's used within it and then somehow export that to a CD/flash drive and make use of it in reports that get played back elsewhere? So effectively, the studios they're not using can't be used because they have no way to export their content to be used?

You wouldn’t have PCs or other equipment like that for that purpose in the studios. You’d have your studio selected by a record bank or edit suite and have the output recorded onto a server. Before severs there were VT areas. I think the latter years of tape the News Channel back half hours came from a tape machine in the N8 gallery but that is something of an exception.

Radio is slightly different - they can start / stop their own recordings but it’s still going to a server in an apps room rather than a PC / drive in the studio. There also tends to be constantly running backup recordings of the studio output incase that first recording should fail.

I spotted him too! Shouldn't he be in the gallery?!

Just after I post that, there's one from Emma Vardy outside Bombardier in Belfast... I suppose that could have been set up before the problems started.

Looked to me like the location bug was being switched on and off manually rather than being automatic and synchronised with the cuts to the OS.

June Kelly in the studio, when she probably would have been outside New Scotland Yard under normal circumstances.

Neat, I learned something new about the process of how they broadcast from the studios! Very Happy

It is a shame that the BBC have not considered making even one of their studios able to record locally in the event of potential issues such as this though. I always thought that in the age of technical issues cropping up at random, you'd have that ability at least in one of them. Oh well, thanks for the explanation!

In which case considering the current temperatures there's probably at least one person happy about this fault...

Newsnight not looking too bad in A actually, albeit the keying being a bit off.

Separately, I can't believe that Newsnight is still using the pre-2013 lower third style graphics!
