What is going on in this picture with the studio? What is happening to the backdrop?

Just interested...

They are just selecting the screen to be used as the backdrop!

That is just the menu for the DVD that provides the projected backdrop. When that backdrop was in use there were day, dusk and night versions to chose from. The text is reversed as the shot in question is being shot into the mirror in the set. (A very neat trick to make it feel a bit bigger than it is.)

I believe the previous BBC WORLD set used a similar trick with a mirror to hide the true size of the studio when they were interviewing people.
