From Media Guardian...

"The unions at odds with the BBC over plans to make 4,000 staff redundant yesterday rejected a compromise and threatened to strike again if the director general, Mark Thompson, did not agree to further talks.

After a five-hour meeting, officials from the three unions involved said the job cuts would have an adverse impact on quality."

As reported by me on the last page. It just seems nobody wants to talk about the strike any more - Stephen Cole seems much more interesting a topic.

Im aware part of the Media Guardian Article has been published but I thought Gibsons article was quite interesting in its full form.

The unions at odds with the BBC over plans to make 4,000 staff redundant yesterday rejected a compromise and threatened to strike again if the director general, Mark Thompson, did not agree to further talks.
After a five-hour meeting, officials from the three unions involved said the job cuts would have an adverse impact on quality.
Following a one-day strike last Monday, industrial action scheduled for yesterday and today was cancelled as a "goodwill gesture" after a marathon 20-hour meeting at the conciliation service Acas.
But the deal offered to union officials by Mr Thompson, in which he promised a year-long moratorium on compulsory redundancies and pledged not to sell BBC Resources, still left too many questions unanswered, said union officials.
"There is too much at stake for us to compromise the future of the BBC,"said the National Union of Journalists general secretary, Jeremy Dear.
The broadcasting union Bectu, the NUJ and Amicus said that while "significant progress" had been made on privatisation, they were "a long way apart" on the job losses.
"We are determined to ensure that the BBC is not dismantled in this reckless fashion," Mr Dear said.
After the BBC pledged to retain BBC Resources and ensure that staff at BBC Broadcast, another division close to being sold off, would receive the pension and benefits they currently enjoyed, both sides are thought to be in virtual agreement on privatisation.
But unions and staff are still angry that the BBC's offer, which the BBC people director, Stephen Dando, said could be withdrawn if it was not accepted, did not address the issue of job losses.
Union officials said yesterday that they were not satisfied that 4,000 job cuts were needed.
Mr Thompson said in an email to staff after last week's Acas talks that there was no room for further negotiation.

Presumably we can't see a strike for at least another week because they still legally have to give 7 days notice.

Is there a time limit (e.g. 1 month since original vote) after which another ballot has to be taken for further strike action?

I note Wimbledon starts a fortnight Monday (20th June)....

Martyn Lewis was good. What's he doing these days?

He said News was all very unpleasant and depressing nowadays so is in a cupboard awaiting happy stories.

I believe he runs his own company these days, he seemed to disappear after 'Today's The Day' got axed, last time he was fronting a programme was late at night on ITV.

YAY! Does anyone remember the pisstake of him - in which Martyn Lewis 'read' the "good news" - I believe arguments frequently ended in "kissing" and a swarm of "love" was seen over Australia.

How I loved that.

Are you thinking of Armando Iannucci on Radio 1 (or 1FM as it was then)? If you are (or even if you're not), I am rather tempted to upload some mp3 examples because they make me laugh every time.

I remember those clips. It was real audio of Martin Lewis reading normal news stories from a recent BBC news broadcast, with 'nice' and 'happy' words inserted over the bad ones by Richard Herring.

Very funny. Was that the show which contained the 25 second Simon Bates 'Our Tune' edits as well..?

Yes indeedy. As well as BBC Radio Berkshire's roundup of world news with a Berkshire perspective. The IRA targeting mortar bombs at new bus lanes north of Reading, 425 million people being killed at a bird sanctuary in Binfield near Bracknell... that sort of thing.

And here is some of that good news from Martyn Lewis, courtesy of Armando Iannucci on Radio 1, circa 1993/1994.

Rapidshare has banned NTL broadband users!

This IP 62.252.XX.XX is not allowed to use the free-service anymore today. We detected very extreme downloads. Don't worry! This has not to be your fault.
Maybe you use a proxy-server. Premium-users are not affected by this ban. Maybe you might want to get a PREMIUM-Account, too.

DAS, can you upload that file to Dr Lobsters webspace?

This is the third time this week I've tried to download something from Rapidshare, and it's been disallowed. Crying or Very sad

Of course... I completely forgot about that thing to be honest - otherwise I'd have used that instead of rapidshare!

Problem is that it doesn't like me for some reason. Not sure if anyone else is having problems uploading stuff?
