In fairness he had little choice. As the article points out, he was not in a union and could have been sacked if he refused to work.
he stepped down from newsreading duties at bbc world, he is the presenter of click online - so i very much doubt there was a contractual obligation.
"Stepped down" is not quite the word most would use.

only one poster. A few others have decided to take this as gospel and a way of slaughtering the bloke.
You seem to assume that there can't already be Steven Flaming Cole dislikers already, the mans a bloody menance; His stlye of presenting is abrupt and flankly rude, He seems unable to carry a sentence without wobling his head and was a terrible reporter and presenter throughtout his time in media.
Now this is my own opinion and I recent having someone tell me I need someone elses to somehow validate it.
I could have sworn a year ago people were so happy he was on News 24 and were asking why he wasn't there earlier. Even BBC World people were asking why he hadn't presented the news there as he was a good presenter. Just because an 'insider' at the BBC says nobody like him, now everybody hates him!
He is a good presenter, even though you say these things, he is damn better than some of the other News 24 and World presenters.
Bring back Peter Coe!

It is also worth remembering that some people's opinions on this board may have been formed through direct contact with said presenter...

Stephen Cole is fairly well known out here in BBC World land. His style of presentation is quite well suited to BBC World News, and he is no worse than various others who currently appear on the channel (such as Nik Gowing and David Jessel).
What goes on behind the scenes is a different story, and I will bow to the personal experiences of Marcus, Matrix and others who know the man personally, or who at least are aware of his true personality or whatever.
But surely, as long as the man does his job properly (i.e. read the autocue and talk to a few people) then that's all that matters????? I have a sales guy who works for me, and I f***ing well hate the b***ard. However, he is great at his job and brings in lots of money.
Isn't that all that matters?
The last time I recall seeing Cole on World actually (strike days and overnights apart) was one weekend a few months back just after the departure of Anita McNaught, and they were trying out a few heads to see how they fitted in. The time before that was his famous (but not culpable) interview that he conducted with the Dow Chemicals / Union Carbide chap who took the BBC for a ride.
Cole ain't that bad........

Well coffee's vile, but anyway.
I was certain Michael Buerk was English, and a quick search shows he seems to be from Solihull. And Sian is a bit like Sara Edwards -- born and brought up in the southeast of England, but from a Welsh family.
Oh and as for my five, well one's definitely retired and two others probably too.
Wyre Davies, Gwenan Edwards [Bangor I think], Mike Embley, Jeremy Bowen [Cardiff], Martyn Lewis [Swansea].

Sian Williams, sorry. I hadn't had my coffee!
Michael Buerk was born in Splott in Cardiff, I believe.
Who are the other Welshies, then?

From Media Guardian...
"The unions at odds with the BBC over plans to make 4,000 staff redundant yesterday rejected a compromise and threatened to strike again if the director general, Mark Thompson, did not agree to further talks.
After a five-hour meeting, officials from the three unions involved said the job cuts would have an adverse impact on quality."
