"Dunedin" is the ancient name of Edinburgh, from where I post this message to you.

At first I thought you might be from new Zealand.

Yes, but that would be 'Eden' not 'Edin', wouldn't it.

No, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, is spelt correctly.

Eden not Edin.
and I live 110km north of Dunedin in New Zealand called Oamaru!!! yay Population 15,320 Smile

On the topic is Stephen Cole a bossy person Marcus? He doesn't seem like one although he does remind me of an old teacher I had who was on the rude side.

When people are on camera, they are a lot different to when they are their normal selves. Don't be fooled! There only seems to be a handful that are genuine both on and off camera.

Actually nearly all the presenters on BBC News are pleasant to work with and there are some incredibly nice genuine people there.

There are always a few oddballs in any job and some whose ego is rather to big for the building they are working in.

There is one who had one of his female colleagues in tears during her shift by being so nasty.

Well, that has confused the situation somewhat.

Again, for clarity, I was referring to the ''EDIN'' part, and interpreted the link to NZ as being an effort to bring up the ''Eden'' link to many place names in and around Auckland, I think based on one of the original governors there.

DunedIn is a place... Mt. EdEn is also a place. They are pronounced pretty much identically.

I don't know whether to be flattered or bemused by the attention my username has provoked.

Suffice it to say I didn't put that much thought into it.

you seem unable to grasp the point that it is not just about the job cuts, it is about the future independence and existence of the bbc.

That's not the reason given to me! Job cuts was the only thing mentioned and still is.

So the sell-off of BBC Broadcast and BBC Resources - both very important parts of the BBC have completely passed you by?

You wouldn't think of Stephen Cole acting like a twit, but I guess why people can label him crazy, he is the only who says who used to say "you're with World" and he even did that with News 24 yesterday.

For all your talk (Marcus and Dog) about the "scabs" who worked yesterday, I don't think you do yourself any favours by slagging people off personally on a public forum.

In fact if your colleagues knew you came on a website and bitched about them behind a vague cloak of anonymity, I'm sure you would be far from flavour of the month.

All sounds a bit hypocritical to me.

Basics facts remain the same- despite an apparent "BBC wide" strike, the strikers were in the vast, vast MINORITY.

"Striking in Sympathy" is a particularly poor tactic and likely to lose supporters with time without pay (should the strikes continue). 13000 went on strike about 4000 job losses- it figures that most of those people striking are going to keep their jobs.

Union leaders get power-trips off strikes- they'll take the BBC staff with them, but they won't be losing their £80k/year salary. Oh no, they're the proper champagne socialists.

If you look back a little in this thread you'll see a post from me detailing quite a few of the reasons that many people striking feel strongly on this issue :

1. Redundancies
2. Guarantees of conditions of service for those leaving the BBC to the outsourcing companies, or those working for the companies buying BBC Resources/Broadcast. Things like final salary pension schemes, maternity and paternity leave etc.
3. The blanket introduction of budget cuts with no real assessment of current staffing and funding levels.
4. The general feeling that there has been no consultation or negotiation, and that the cuts are biased and favour management.

I think most people working for the BBC accept that change is a continuing fact of life - but that such a radical change to the structure of the BBC should be discussed with those who ARE the BBC, not just imposed with no consultation. Scarily enough there are employees who can think of ways of working differently, and saving money, not just senior managers...

Stephen Cole once read

"And now the business news with dot dot dot" because the name wasn't filled in on the autoque.

LOL, well when he was on World, he was perhaps the most relaxed looking presenter on there, but perhaps too relaxed for BBC World, I think he even said once "You're with World - Headlines", where of course you would normally hear "You are watching BBC World with me presenter's name, the headlines.

Did I just hear Trevor McDonald say that BBC staff are planning a 48-hour 'workout' next week?

I know Mark Thompson wants a leaner, meaner BBC, but... Laughing
