Just back to Five Live- the temporary service proves that Travel reporters can all be sacked- the newsreaders surprisingly don't struggle to add in a bit of travel news into the ends of their bulletins before the sport.

How does it prove anything?? First thing this morning the travel was 'it's quiet, not much to tell you' (I quote from Five Live). They might provide a little travel news read from a script from another company, but they sure as heck aren't going to give as good a service when it's busy.

All Nations and Regions bulletins 'pulled', replaced by Animal Park

At least he's brave enough to be honest.

Quite. If he believes that, then good luck to him. Everyone has a right to their views.

While I don't want to make assumptions and it is a personal decision, it would be quite likely that Evan Davis had similar thoughts. He oftens talks about which large companies/businesses/corporations in the private sector needing to slimline and concentrate elsewhere etc. as it's his job as economics editor.

If he accepted the BBC's business case for the cuts, then fair enough.

So 'it's quiet, not much to tell you' (that was the entire report at 7am) is a higher quality service, is it?

Jesus, sometimes I wonder about you lot.

At least it beats all the banter that usually goes on and gets in the way of important information.

Ref your comments about Nick Witchell, I now recall that several years ago when I lived in the UK, he presented all news bulletins during a day when the NUJ was on strike. I now remember it well, in fact.

So, I would not be surprised if he turns up tonight.

Cheers,
James

5 Live are being extremly devious by using sport reporters and producers to read the news.

Sport have an awful lot to lose too, so why are there so many sport people not striking?

Why is this devious?

Five Live have a responsibility to try and maintain as good a service as possible- they're managing half hourly live news and sport updates which is pretty good given the circumstances.

I'm surprised they haven't gone down a live phone-in route....staff like Victoria Derbyshire (although scheduled to be away) are freelance and therefore cannot strike with the BBC staff...I'm sure they could hire in freelance phone operators and run an ad-libbed live news/sport phone in with regular updates.

I think if we see future strikes in the next few week the BBC will have a better idea of who will and won't work....the result will be a better and better service with each strike thereby diminishing the impact of the NUJ.

Ha ha. Why don't you just get out a big sign that says 'student'.

Most freelance staff won't work during a strike. They're union members too, and often don't want to be seen not to be supporting the staff they work with day to day. Doing a sensible phone in takes staff. I'm not talking about the sort of crap you get on Talk Sport, and you can't just hire people off the street to operate gear; to know where the legal line is etc.

5 Live gave up the day the strike was announced. They knew there was/is no point in trying to do any kind of normal programming. Infact the idea was that the top brass would read the news, though they've managed to get a couple of scab sport hacks to show their real colours.

No. They're run by their co-owner Flextech.
