How much longer can Aktar last for? He's doing pretty well for his 8th consecutive hour on air, but is starting to sound a bit tired.

BBC 1 just opted out of News 24, with a still saying "The next News is on BBC One at 1.00pm."

Surely he's going to be pretty unpopular with his colleagues after this. On second thoughts, as a travel presenter, he is probably never around anyway!! He's probably getting a nice bonus from the management as well!!

And isn't this an excellent career opportunity... Wouldn't be surprised to see him back in the not to distant future on this mornings performance.

Do you think that this is the BBC World "has-been" referred to above, or should we expect someone else later today?

Morning all,

I'm assuming that this Ahktar fella is the 'One' person reportedly happy to present on News 24, but as you all rightly point out, eight hours in, it will be interesting to see how long he lasts for.

Well I didn't think so, but his BBC biog says "Presenter, BBC World, BBC News 24 and BBC Asian Network"

But that could just be referring to Fasttrack as a BBC World/N24 programme.

Also, another story on MG says that Darren Jordon is lined up to present the main bulletins, but last night was still deciding whether to break the picket line.

Nah, I think the "old-hand" is still to come. I mean there are laws on the amount of hours he can work in a studio.
But he is doing very well considering the constant technical problems, and what is happening with the "In Brief" scrap? Every time it appears the tower/astons crash...

EDIT: Ackhtar OVERLOAD, News followed by Fasttrack - That mans everywhere all of a sudden

Mm, yes, he was struggling a bit when interviewing Daisy Sampson "..in our Westminster.. er.. room". Can't say I blame him, though.. I'm not very good with the whole 'speaking' thing after long days.

Fast Track's coming up next.

The weather seems to be live - are the Weather Centre part of a different union, or simply not BBC staff, hence their presence?

Just in from the NUJ:

"BBC Birmingham: Union reps in Birmingham confirm all live news is off air."

I'll hopefully get more views from the Mailbox (BBC Birmingham) later on when I pass through there on my way to work.

Remember all that fuss on the news recently about the European Working Time Directive, and how companies can choose to opt out? The BBC opts out. (Besides, he could be going for a kip in all the back half hours, you never know..)
