The slightly disappointing thing is that when regular programming gets replaced by films, comedy and cartoons because of a strike...... a lot of the viewers think it's better than the regular schedule!

Again like I said in one of my previous posts, take a look at the TV Strike's page on TV Cream. As that mentions the NUJ Strike of 1985 when there was no News at all (*they went on strike as the BBC Governors refused to show a documentary about Northern Ireland) on TV, Radio, Ceefax etc. It later mentions that there were letters in the Radio Times the week after with people saying they wish it could be like that everyday.

There's also a BBC2 interval from that day, where instead of Ceefax there's a caption explaining the situation, it's somewhere on MHP Private Parts.

How does this affect freelance presenters, particulary the ones based in the regional studios?

Eg, If I went by the Mailbox on Monday(which I won't, as I'll be back at work then), would I see the likes of Goldie, Nick Owen,Doolan & Franksy on a picket line, or just the newsroom staff?

I'll have to listen part of Monday.

(Mollie Green will be interesting. She hasn't a clue half the time anyway!)

Staff from LBC are going to be serving refreshments to BBC staff on the picket line, apparently.

A good publicity stunt, though LBC's studios in Bramley Road are quite close to TVC (albeit separated by the West Cross Route).

aren't there strict rules about the size of picket lines? so id imagine the union leaders at bbc brum would dominate the line-up, if there is a picket line of course ... what with the walkway outside the openspace being owned by the mailbox.

i'd imagine some WM/mids today presenters are members of NUJ, who are on strike. freelance or not freelance many journos/techies are members of unions, and IMO being a member is probably even more essential when youre a freelancer.

itll certainly be interesting to see who shows up.

edit: and whats this "bbc coventry" all about, its cwr don't you know Smile

I thought they would be calling it 'BBC Coventry & Warwickshire' anyway, & what's the betting I go over the character limit, if I add '& Warwickshire' as well !

I'll try it.

If it don't change, you'll know I've gone over the limit !

(TVM, do you actually work in the media industry, or are you 'Joe Public' like yours truly?)

Will BBC World be effected? If not, will they simply switch to them? I remember last year there was some accident in the studios and the first 15 minutes of the 1 o' clock news was replaced by BBC world.

I thought it was a fire alarm and it was the One. The last time an accident happened the Ten moved to News 24's CSO studio

BBC World will be affected in the same way as the rest of BBC News. I suspect there will be a generic service put out on News24 and World.

Yes, I think they'll do it in the style of the overnight service. Joint bulletins for the first 25 mins of the hour, recorded programmes in the back half hour.

Breakfast might be simulcast on BBC WORLD and branded as "BBC NEWS" for the first half hour and branded as "Breakfast" during the back half hour (where World opts out). It certainly won't be coming from the Breakfast studio. I think they'll either use the News 24 or World studio.

BTW, which channel needs more staff on a weekday, News24 or World?

I doubt it - Breakfast will be BBC News for half-hour only, then recorded progs on One/News 24 - they won't be able to put out a 3 hour show even if part of it is shared. As has been said before - when there was a strike in '98, Breakfast News was dropped, and just 3 half hour news bulletins at TOTH.
