So Is it over for Studio B for good?

All that has been said is something about them learning that they don't need as much studio capacity.

Victoria Derbyshire Show won't return. That's the only confirmed programme to no longer use B. So we don't know yet.

No. Newsnight, Marr and World also not using B in the future, so it will likely be sitting empty.

If B is mothballed long term does this reduce the ability for it to be used again or are they likely to keep the equipment running?

Has A had any use or is that also mothballed?

The BBC has a long standing agreement with the unions that there should be no compulsory redundancies and that voluntary redundancy and redeployment within the corporation is always the first option when looking to reduce the headcount.

That's a legal requirement for ANY EMPLOYER , not just the BBC.

It's probably worth noting that with the cuts in regional news where they're going from 2 to 1 presenter they appear to be requiring the presenter to apply for the job.

Whilst this may in part be a way to avoid claims of unfair dismissal, it's also a mechanism for companies to impose new contracts on staff members. In my own job I've known a supplier do this, and conveniently move some staff off older contracts at the same time.

The concept of removing dedicated journalists/reporters for specific programmes is a process that appears to have been happening for a while. I seem to recall Panorama lost theirs in previous cuts, coincidentally not that long after their Saville/Newsnight/BBC investigation. I guess part of the aim is to ensure they don't have two programmes with their own reporters unknowingly investigating almost exactly the same thing, and as such duplicating resources in doing so.

I don´t think that it was confirmed that World branded programming (which use B in the most part) won´t return when the restrictions are lifted (in fact, a new business program is going to be launched).

We've been told they propose carrying on with suspending programmes in B which sounds a lot like it'll be empty.

So, forgive me if I am wrong, but from what I've read and being told here this is what is happening presentation wise:

- Programmes (such as Newsnight and Marr) will remain in E

- News Channel and World will continue to simulcast during the hours it currently does (19:00-06:00) (10:00-12:00) (A total of 13 hours)

- The Papers will remain in C which begs the question whether or not it will be fully "AI-ed" so the updated graphics with the papers going round the desk and stuff can be worked.

- Six looses rehearsal time as World will be in C (unless of course they use A, seems unlikely?) So news channel will be in E from 09:00-19:00.

I get why they'd continue with the simulcasts in the evening. Before the pandemic the evening schedule was as jumpy as a box of frogs with one hour of UK news sandwiched between 2 completely different World programmes. The current set up makes more sense. But I don't get the 10:00-12:00 simulcast? I guess it's so the World shifts can be 0500-1000, 1200-1600, 1600-2000, 2000-2200, 2200-0100, 0100-0500?

I'm not sure if they are doing 10-12, the only reason I think they are is due to the fact the statement said something about retaining "morning and evening". It could, of course, just mean the overnight hours.

If Newsnight and Marr remain in E indefinitely then they really do need to do something with the red panelling in the studio as purple and red for Newsnight do not go together at all.

Plus the desk could do with being removable and the studio space being a bit more flexible.

It’s a shame other studio spaces that are currently occupied by other channels can’t be utilised like BBC Persian which Newsnight occupied in December. That space was ok apart from the peanut shaped desk.

If they are planning on E being even more versatile, then upgrades will be necessary, and not just a curtain.. Wink
