What's even worse about these fantasy rotas and sacking of people is that it is blatantly obvious that people individuals dislike personally get the sack on their terms. It's quite rediculous.

I'm not going to sit here and pretend that I don't have an ideal scenario in my head, because I do, but it's not the place, or the time, for me to share that, and I'm sure the hundreds loosing their jobs won't be particularly too worried on who will present the 10 on the first Wednesday of January.

I guess Newsday (the television version) will return at some point, in some form or another. The slot will definitely remain simulcast, whatever the name of the programme filling it.

Sharing a message I’ve received from someone at BBC News:

Quote:

FFS 699 OF US ABOUT TO LOSE OUR JOBS AND TV forum is playing at fantasy rotas again. Your lot are clueless.

Unquote.

*699 is his figure. But I believe a typo. But he’s right about the fantasy rotas. There’s a time and a place and it’s probably not here and now.

I did wonder how long it would be before someone said this

The reputation of this forum must be going down rapidly

Massive job cuts, and the main take out is fantasy rotas and fantasy studio allocation

I think some people need to tone it down a bit, there has already been 6 breathless pages since 3pm as if this is an exciting development

Your friend has a fairish point Andrew. I too am having conversations with friends at the BBC, it totally sucks. But that said, this is called TVFORUM and as such members should be permitted to discuss such drastic pay cuts. I 100% agree with you about the fantasy schedules and asked mods to create a thread or not bother at all. I despise them! (NOT MODS) Wink

Everyone is hurting, I feel for your friend as I feel for mine, but I think it's a bit tough to call out the forum for discussing what it was set out to do.

Not overly familiar with who presents when on the News Channel, but my impression is that there seems to be a large, costly number of presenters in lots of unfixed slots. Cutting the number of presenters and creating two teams (A: Mon-Thurs, B: Fri-Sun) seems like a reasonable solution. So save for holiday and absences, you’d only need two presenters a week for each slot.

I would like to publically apologise for my post above containing a schedule. I wasn't intending to fantasise about sacking or demote anyone, just merely stating what I think a schedule could look like after cuts have been made. And I've absolutely nothing against George and Fiona. They are two highly experienced, respected, admirable, long serving journalists and presenters and it would be a real shame to lose either of them, even more so both. BBC News would be much less without them.

I now realise that hundreds of people are about to lose their jobs and this wasn't the time or place. Again, I apologise.

Such a shame to hear of Andrew Neil's show being axed. He's always struck me as a incisive and capable presenter/interviewer as well as a damn good writer. Hope he gets a new vehicle soon.

Jesus you would think we were elected officials. You shouldn't feel the need to issue an apology.

The TV forum always seem to get into a state and become very gravitas. This is just a web forum, only TV geeks will read it. With great respect to the forum and its users, "nobody" cares what we think. We shouldn't have illusions of grandeur. Neither should certain members attempt to influence what is and isn't' discussed or make other users feel bad. That is what the forum admins are for. Nobody has died, we must lighten up.

In other news, I suspect Andrew Neil will turn up on the News Channel or perhaps on Newsnight?

Can't do right for doing wrong...

Andrew Neil on the News Channel? It's not Radio 4.

A rigid Mon-Thurs, Fri-Sun schedule only minimises the required number of presenters if there is the same number of presenters on weekdays and weekends. Otherwise a combination of different working days for each presenter with some presenters working across a number of shifts allows a smaller number of presenters to cover the same number of shifts.

As I understand it, Newsday (TV) hasn’t been mentioned at all. Previously it was on World News only at 2300 then simulcast on News Channel at 0000 and 0100.

Another error by myself. I had no idea there was a radio show called NewsDay on Radio. PHEW!

It is probably the best rolling news show on radio - an awful shame to hear about the cutbacks from two editions to one.

Not good for the brilliant journalists that present it on World Service radio.

Yes, but lots of industry insiders also read it. Many of whom, as a result of today’s announcements along with the hundreds of job losses already announced in English regions and the Nations, are now worried about their livelihoods.

Where had 699 jobs being lost come from, that’s a heck of lot of jobs to go.

From a cost saving perspective, does it really matter how many presenters there are, as long as they are paid appropriately for the amount of work they do?

Once the changes are worked through, it could be that some go part time or job-share. Not necessarily cutting the number of presenters, but still saving the BBC money
