I think the main problem with the pages is they've made the right hand bar too wide whilst keeping the body squashed.

Use that stonehenge page as an example
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7322134.stm

it looks as if it is floating too far to the left as none of the headlines fit the space and the "BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites" thing looks daft too.

If they only made that 50px narrower and fixed the header it would be a vast improvement.

The HTML however is as bad as ever. I fail to understand why so much whitespace is downloaded every time for that main sidebar. The page weight is about 70k when it could be closer to 30k easily.

Is it just me, or does it remind anyone else of the opening to World News Today on BBC Four.

Well World News Today does use white and red rather than the generic black and red look- so in that respect it is simular. But it doesn't scream WNT!!!! Wink

It's a little bit like NOS Journaal (also created by Lambie Nairn) and i'm very much a fan of the white wash look. I hope it as as much detail and visual elements as the 1999 original Lambie Nairn work, it's difficult to judge from web resolution as everything is high compressed and may not actually reflect the exact look of the television brand (the 1999 BBC News online banner did not entirely match the TV visuals).

So I shall wait until 21st April unless we get some leaked images or press releases before then! Very Happy

The right hand column however appears to line up with the BBC News header graphic so might look strange if it was adjusted.

I agree about the disclaimer though, they should force it to cut over two lines at a more pleasing point

I noticed how poorly most websites were built when I only had dial-up for a month. In the early years of the internet, everyone focused on page sizes and fast loading, now it seems more lazy as people think that everyone has fast connections. Not always the case though, especially on a site with a global audience.

The header picture reminds me of this and especially this, from NRK in Norway.

Would it look better like this, using the current Breaking News strap, but with the new data streams.

I'm not convinced by the 'globe' graphic. The ocean is too... white.

The On This Day section, part of BBC News, could do with a touch-up.

That site has been left alone now, never to be touched again.

I think you'll find if you look closely, it's transparent.

Grrr to all the people who meant that I nearly drowned in the pages of people going 'no, still nothing' at 2am this morning.
