Err - studio cameras are not significantly lighter than they were about 25 years ago.
The BBC must still be filled with lots of old cameras then. What a hideous thing to say

well to be fair they are a bit larger than the miniDV cam you take on holiday with you.

Yes, but they do a lot more than a miniDV camcorder; the newer studio cameras ARE a lot smaller than cameras made 25 years ago, just look at this for example:

I don't really have an interest in the technical equipment, but if you look at the camera's for BBC Arabic and AlJazeera English, they look much much lighter than those used by BBC News/World and Sky News.
Anyway, back to the upcoming rebrand, would it be possible for N6 to have the VR like BBC Arabic, so that an extra floor could be added, or something like BBC Arabic's studio? I think using this for News 24 would actually make the studio look a bit more exciting, as in my personal opinion, I can't see News 24 looking comfortable in that environment, especially as a rolling news channel. It will be very interesting come the big launch day.

I think it's quite an achievement. Only TV Forum could manage 69 pages on a topic with very little hard fact

I like how this thread has gone from discussing how N24 is going to be able to handle breaking news during the simulcasts and the technical challenges of merging two different styles of news broadcast to "my camera's smaller than yours"...

But we're all assuming you don't produce broadcast quality images of your holiday antics, or do you?
Are you going HD this year?

The technology these days, means that you don't need major lighting grids, or a lot of soundproofing.
Don't know who told you that - but they're pulling a fast one.
Spot on Noggin. I've seen first hand the results when studio facilities are put together 'at a cost' because they were only intended to be used for webcasting, then the changing needs of the business has seen the technology installed heavily upgraded beyond the original scope to full broadcast quality - but nothing additional spent on the rather basic studio fabric. So the lighting, soundproofing and general layout end up letting down the fantastic technical facilities available.
Anyone who produces video in Bush knows of where I speak.

Great to actually have someone on this forum who talks sense. I own and operate a Sony DXC-D30 myself, often with a triax back - may be a more dated model, especially when shooting PSC stuff - 570s and 450s are much preferred -
But back to the original point, cameras as a whole are still big, sizeable objects, and they need to be. Plus in studio configuration on the peds, with autocue and remotes, it all makes up for a quite large package.

A triax backed BVP 570 or D30 doesn't way significantly less or take up massively less space than an Ikegami 79D or Sony 330AP...
The Thomson 1647s used in the very early 90s, and the 1657s used in the 00s, the LDK100s use in the late 90s and still in use by News 24 and BBC World, and the BVPD30s currenlty in use are roughly the same form factor...
Autocue hoods have shifted from CRTs to LCDs - and are a bit lighter - but have to be roughly the same surface area to provide the same size prompt (in fact the large LCDs are a bit bigger). Also it is now common to mount preview monitors underneath in the volume previously taken up by the CRT.
