I liked News 24 when it first launched and used that space currently used by BBC World. I also liked the desk with the view of the top level and staircase of the news centre.

It could almost be like set number 2 now when the camera is far enough round when things like the sport are on in the large stand up area. Loose the perspex and hey presto there you go. Admittedly that was one of the biggest problems with that set at the time, because it was so open the blinds had to be closed most of the time because of too much light was affecting the shots in the "studio". Now of course there is a big screen in front to stop this.

I was thinking, couldn't the One, or N24 go to the studio The One Show is in, to avoid a simulcast?

Heres the hideous desk on Hardtalk!

This desk has always been there, and used for Newsnight. Why is it only now provoking such comments?

Looks much better here.

EDIT: Come to think of it. It does look exactly the same now lol however its not suited for anything else but newsnight.

In a word - no.

The One Show is broadcast from a different building on a different site to the News Centre - and has very few of the facilities required by a daily news programme. It has no automation, no remote controlled cameras, and only a small number of outside source lines - certainly not enough for a daily news programme. It requires far higher levels of staff - sparks, LD, vision, camera crew and assistants etc. as it has a more flexible studio on a day-to-day basis, with a much greater emphasis on the use of the space. (You don't see 30 Elvis impersonators, an omelette chef, or a kissing world record attempt often in the news studios, or using their facilities...)

Also - I don't think the News would wish to come from a set so identifiably branded in "look" as The One Show - and the studio is such that you couldn't re-set between shows. Somehow I can't see newsreader sat on a lime-green sofa with multicoloured lighting behind them whilst they cover breaking news on an important international story.

The One Show studio was designed to avoid it looking like a news show after all...

What about using the BBC Sport studio. It has got screens and the sofa can be replaced with a desk.

It would be the same problem I guess.

The best solution IMO would have been to have the BBC London newsroom on standby for use when the main two are overflowing, but that's situated elsewhere apparently, so perhaps would also face the same problems.

Personally I don't think there is an issue with the simulcast unless people make an issue out of it. As I've always said, if the breaking news is important, it'll break into the main bulletin - and if it's doesn't warrant that, it's nothing that couldn't wait till half past anyway.

The BBC London studio is halfway across London. There would have to be some serious pre-planning to get the right people and feeds in the right places. Certainly not something which could be organised in a few minutes.

Whilst the sports studio has some of the right facilities - it doesn't have all of them and is a much more expensive space to run. It is staffed by BBC Resources (as is The One Show) - not BBC News and would require a significant amount of money to be spent on it to integrate it into the News production systems (servers, IT etc.)

Whilst the screens are flexible - the set is pretty massive, pretty fixed and, like The One Show, a long way from the BBC brand. Also - they quite often do sport in there (even though you might not see the studio one or two of the galleries are often on-air - even for Press Red services)

Yes - and why use BBC London when BBC News have a studio and production facilities at Millbank? They have the same limitations though - miles away and OK for planned coverage - but not for the breaking news scenario that is likely to cause much of the requirement for a BBC One/News 24 split.
