Well I heard that the dimensions of N6 are not changing at all. Basically the Barco screens are staying exactly where they are! Wink

Well they are hard up against the walls as they are (well with a bit of space for maintenance) The studio has a much larger floor area than it with the previous projector based sets.

But that some new furniture is on its way for the N24 move. Whether that means a new desk, soft seats, pillars or whatever I'm not sure.

I think it is clear that a round desk on that set won't work for a double headed news channel without two manned cameras (you would struggle to keep cameras out of shot if you didn't man them)

The desk will have to move on the studio floor as well - as you wouldn't be able to get guests in and out on the left hand side without walking in front of cameras shooting the right hand side.

What I'm gathering from this... is the longest of the 3 walls going to be used for the main backdrop, therefore having 2 side walls if you will? A long-ish desk would stretch quite a way across, and there would be room either side for guests etc. I think that would look a lot more effective than the current desk-plonked-in-the-middle-of-nowhere situation they have in (what was) the national news studio.

Or am I completely off the mark?

What's this silly idea some people have got about doing 2 broadcasts from the same studio at the same time? What nonsense, surely?

Been done before - I recall live (or at least seemed live) CBBC pres on BBC1 and BBC2 at the same time. Due to some wierd scheduling they were putting the last kids programme on BBC1 out at the same time as the first on BBC2, so they started the BBC1 junction from Pres A with two presenters, one (possibly Phillipa Forester) walked off shot and appeared on BBC2 shortly after from the other side of the studio while BBC1 was still in the same studio, doing birthdays or similar.

Or that's how it appeared at the time.

TC5 was split into effectively two studios so two sport programmes could go out at once.

One thing I was thinking, perhaps BBC News 24 can avoid some awkward moments, by switching over to BBC World for a 30min bulletin, while rehearsals are on going for the National bulletin?

A separation of Domestic and Worldwide new updates...

That was my thought as well Martin. Especially for this interim period of musical chairs in N8 for BBC One bulletins.

The problem at the moment is that those just watching N24 get a somewhat dis-jointed service, with headlines being announced at 16:20 (for example - Sunday afternoon). They could've just had N24 simulcast with WORLD for the 16:00 - 17:00 hour and nobody would really have noticed. Well, it's done the other way round at night without people complaining who watch BBC WORLD (or do they?)

OK this is a quick idea for N6, but here goes...

Interesting idea. And lovely design there. One little point, are the side walls really different sizes?

Haven't they started to do this in TC7, by using the side walls for the programmes rather than the back to keep programmes inside their areas.

They are. Hence the reason Breakfast, when in N6, had to move the desk to the smaller side. The sofa would be too big for the background if it wasn't moved.

Because of the arrangement, this was the only way to give them equal space with the screens...

When the National's section isn't in use, News 24 would take that area, and when the Nationals are on air, unless there is breaking news, they could make use of the other end. The only change over needed, will be the backing images, and removal of one of the Desks, although having the graphic reports on the back wall while the presenter is sat at the desk could work...

Interesting. I do like the desk too, its something different, but not too different. Part of me actually likes the red on the walls.

What are we thinking that they will do with the background?
Film the newsroom in someway, add a camera somewhere, even if it's at the top of those stairs or off the balconey looking down, or create something in a similar vain to the BBC One bulletins?

Would they want to keep moving the desk in and out?
I had presumed that they would use the other side of the studio for the sport, and in depth interviews, etc.

Could it work sat around, or maybe perched on the desk? I know it wouldn't look as good, but it may work casually for presenting the sport.

Though Ideally it would be nice to have the space free so to do weather, and even stand up demonstrations or intros at the top of the hour.

Removing the Desk would be needed for Stand-Up screen reports, Weather, or for virtual 3D graphic reports.

Personally I would like them to go back to the Launch idea of visiting the Sports, Business and Weather desks in the newsroom...

NATIONAL'S WIDE SHOT

I came up with something similar. It uses a desk slightly smaller than the current N6 desk, with two sections coming off at each side, so you can sit up to six at one time. This is how the Nationals would look. In the time up to a bulletin one presenter would set at the edge of the desk.
