At some point the routing will have to be switched as mentioned a few posts ago....

Now, I'm assuming that this will be done during breakfast as to cause little or no noticable artifacts on-screen.

But...... they could decide to hand over the current studio and gallery to World at 1am, and carry out the re-routing at some point through the night.

I agree with the consensus so far though, I doubt there will be any noticeable differences until at least 5am (4GMT) when the new day starts in the world of news.

What do they have to do to re-route the channels?

The output from the current gallery needs to be re-routed to come from the gallery at N6 so that it plays out and gets broadcast.

Its a simple proceedure if done correctly, just a case of pushing a few buttons in what is an awfully large racks room.

Everything is run so that in an emergency things can be re-routed quickly, but can cause a considerable jump, or the appearance of something unsavoury on-screen if bodged.

I think they will do it during breakfast when its a joint output, however if they do it when N24 and World are together in the next few hours, it may well be noticeable.

The other thing that will happen will be the lack of graphics, which would be a good give-away that it is taking place.

Routers don't produce that much of a picture disturbance, they could probably hot cut it without being noticable.

What's more likely though is that whoever's in N8 will just cut up the output of N6 on the vision mixer at 8:30 when it takes over from Breakfast. Then at some point in the future N8 will be routed out of the loop completely. I would have thought that they'd leave it routed to air via N8 for a bit in case of any teething problems in N6's gallery.

it's worth remembering that every device/video source in a production centre/TV station is all connected up to a central matrix. It's very quick and easy to route anything into anything else... although of course to switch the source for a transmission output is normally a function kept hidden away from everyone but the engineers!

A valid point well raised.

And thinking about it, I can see the logic there.

The last time I saw a routing change take place, there was a sync issue of around 1.5 secs which was clearly evident.

That wasn't at the BBC though I might add.

It's all digital and sync-locked so there shouldn't be any disturbance at all. It's not as smooth as a vision mixer but not far off compared with the old days!

Although such a change would normally be done on a shot change (the top of the hour or between a couple of trails for example) to try and disguise any slight glitch or diffrences in levels between the two

Last ever BBC News 24 TOTH (under the 24 named titles) with an unusual headline animation and no headline graphics.

But why? Surely they need to get some practice in N9 for the time being...?

If they are going to broadcast overnights from the N8 set as it is for BBC World its a disgrace as its such a mess.
