This revamp is all tied to the major changes that are happening across BBC News. Doing it this way will save money in the long term, as they won't then have to make changes in two years to accomodate a new look.
It's probably the last set of big changes until the move to Broadcasting House in 20xx.
Another problem with pale sets, they get grubby very quickly. With darker sets it's harder to notice smudges, shoe marks etc.
I very much hope that the white will just be for the titles and graphics.
The titles ang graphics were only done a year ago so are you sure they will be changing. And I too dont like the sound of this white wash I Hope they look at there genious 1999 look as insperation.

The previous titles and graphics lasted less than 1 year
interesting that the BBC News is getting ANOTHER revamp, they seem to be doing it at closer intervals since 2004.
I do get the sense that these revamps are happening more and more often. I know nothing stays still forever but it is really necessary to go for a wholesale change at a time when BBC News is tightening up its purse? By all means look over how best to redesign N6 to accommodate News 24 but a mass national/regional change again just seems over the top.
After all, all that'll happen is the powers that be in the regions get bored and soon start breaking away from set design, graphic templates, titles etc. and just go and do their own 'take' on it anyway.
The whole of BBC News is a mess at the moment - presentation wise I mean...with the exception of News 24 and BBC World - the regions and the nationals seriously need some work - astons, graphics, studios all over the place - looking pretty tatty now - i know money is an issue, but getting a comprehensive rebrand sounds pretty good to me.

Exactly Asa - there's been three versions I think of the current globe/ribbon titles, and really apart from us here would anyone notice the differences when the look is basically the same. IMO the mistake last time was putting the new interpretation across all the output - they should have kept the existing one for the BBC1 bulletins, and used the new version for News 24 - making it slightly different, but still keeping it within the corporate brand.
As someone said, it's the regions which need sorting out - and that's simply adapting the North West's look nationwide. I don't really understand why in 1999/2000 a generic look was create for the regions, but ever since the regions have basically been left to their own devices, which have been very hit and miss.
Those globe and ribbon graphics were done in house, and were obviously a stop gap to replace the 1999 titles, so they would match the new studios. As time as gone on, everyone has gone their separate ways, and now with the cost cutting, its time BBC News pulls itself together again, especially as News 24 and the National News are quite literally pulling together!
