Back to the topic in hand... can someone please shed some light as to what has cost £500,000?

As far as I can see, the titles are graphics that several members on this forum could knock up in a few days. There's nothing radical about the concept so its not as if the money is for creative ideas.

From reading the forum I get the feeling that quite a lot has been spent replacing technical equipment in N6 that was now approaching 10 years old, so some money will have gone on that.

Just think about the about of stuff LN have had to do. New, individual, titles for every regional news programme in the english regions and the nations. New titles for all network programmes, the News channel and BBC World and it's array of stings and various programme titles.

On top of that add the stuff we may not have seen yet like new graphics, countdowns, promos, oh and the new desk/furniture in N6 and the redesign of N9 for when World move in! I think £0.5m is pretty good value if you think about it. Smile

Don't forget that BBC World would also be pitching in money for this re-launch, meaning the half a million is probably less for the UK licence payer.

Yep - though it is also equally important to remember that there are only a few core templates for these title sequences to design, with the changes between regions being purely a post production exercise, not a design one.

Don't know if that figure includes or excludes a new set for BBC World when they move into the space News 24 is vacating on Monday.

A forum member in his bedroom would probably have come up with identical sequences in a few days... if they knew the end result first!

The designers don't just come up with something and go 'that'll be £500,000 please'. They would have come up with several diffrent treatments (concepts) for the BBC to select and then it'll be developed to come up with the end product that is finally approved for air. There would certainly have been some research done, both in terms of content and audience perception

It's not a quick or cheap job - the wages of those involved won't be cheap.

In the 'kit of parts' that each region and nation would have received, there's at least 20 clips, stings, animating backgrounds, loops, 8pm graphics (yes these are changing too). These would all be customised for each region (since they all have local names spinning round)

Then there's the generic kit of parts - astons etc. 2-way graphics, all needing customised too, the print elements / logos for each region, guidelines etc.

For English regions, there's the filming / acquiring of location material that's used in the titles, the majority of which would have been custom shot.

Throw in music dubbing you have to do, editing time to put together at least 15 of those 'kit of parts' and it all adds up and as said, can't really be knocked up in a few minutes and in fact would take a good few days per sequence to complete the graphics, then a while in post production to put it together.

All sounds simple, but add about 20 BBC staff from across the UK who are in charge of news programming throwing in their wishes / requests / changes and you'll see it' s not something simple....

Will probably just change from red to white, its only a graphic on a CSO, not too big a deal...

To be fair though the current graphics don't relate that much to the current BBC News branding - why couldn't they keep it as it is or have made it white before?

Its currently red because its on BBC One I suppose, also the new look wasn't ready in time for the 8pm launch probably, and they did use the new regional logos, so they didnt do too bad.

Does anyone know how it's changing?

Interesting to note the 8pm graphics use Gill Sans. Also, the regional logo's use the new style such as: Look North . With the region in bold, like the new regional titles.
