It always has seemed a bit perverse that Breakfast is a lot more formal at the weekends, when most of the audience are more relaxed, with the whole lot coming from the desk in N8 rather than the sofa in N6/TC7

The decision has also been made NOT to use the Breakfast backing during the weekend, which is a pity as the programme would benefit from consistent branding 7 days a week.

Can I ask why? Surely it doesn't take too much effort.

It wasn't that we couldn't... more a decision made on high that we shouldn't.
I'm assuming that they didn't want 4 hours of the channel looking like Breakfast on a saturday morning and wanted to retain the BBC News Branding for this key part of the channels programming.

Why will it still be known as Breakfast then? Confused Seems a bit flawed somewhere along the line.

Isn't the dropping of "24" and the use of a harmonised brand all to do with the fear of one part of the news service being trimmed in budget cuts?

The use of one brand providing so many different services puts them in a stronger position to argue against such cuts.

Wow. I never thought of that, and as far as I can remember, nor did anyone else in the last 200 pages.

And it makes perfect sense really. Make N24 the producer of network bulletins, rename it BBC News to emphasise how intrinsic it is, and essentially put it at the heart of the whole News operation. Makes an argument against its existence pretty irrelevant. It's clever.

EDIT: and needless to say, if the above is what's motivating this, the 24 will not be coming back.

The view is pre-recorded. I think there is also only the one recorded sadly. Though I have wondered how much footage there is. Presumably in excess of an hour to avoid any nasting jumping.

Originally the view was static - but it was reshot on High Definition video from a number of angles (8 or 9 I think) - and then stitched together. To do it live would need that number of HD cameras and live links from the roof of Millbank Tower (where it was shot from) - not really cost effective - and stitching that kind of thing live would require quite a lot of extra kit... (There is also a tiny bit of "creativity" with the London geography in part with the current backdrop - though not the original static one)

The resolution is around 12,000 pixels by 1000 - not your average camcorder job...

And if you keep your eyes open you will see the loop point (there is less footage than the duration of the show) - though it has been VERY well done and you really have to know what to look out for. To shoot it for it to be more than an hour loop would have needed more than one camera - as 8 or 9 views would take 8 or 9 hours to shoot (and the weather would change) to shoot with a single camera, and space where the view is shot from is very tight)

They should just drop the Breakfast name at the weekend and simply call it 'BBC News'. It is very inconsistent as I assume they will continue to use the generic BBC News astons and graphics.

Edit: I noticed the video wall acting up again today. One of the screens went off behind Louise Minchin, it was flashing on and off like an analogue TV losing it's signal.

Yep, hence the BBC News copyright aston at the end and the BBC News in the titles. Wink

It would surprise me if they were to rename Breakfast as " BBC News at Breakfast". (Maybe I shouldn't have said that... Confused )

Why have you put spaces between the quote marks and the word? Strange.

Yea....well, I would've thought so and I really hope it is anyway! Presentation wise (and, to a certain extent, content) it has gone downhill recently - just compare it to the 2000-2002 Raworth and Bowen (and Stuart) era.

I'm a fan of Bill and Sian and prefer them to Dermot and Natasha, but presenting a 3 1/4 hour programme from one sofa, in one corner of a studio with limited camera angles, a poor backdop and outdated, poor quality graphics can't make the best of news programmes!
