The black and red may be a bit dark, but even with the worst of headlines the titles were never inappropriate.

I wouldn't go quite that far. The 2003 titles (top-right in Bail's video) starting on a big explosion? I remember watching the 1 O'Clock News on the day of the London Bombings thinking "ah, the irony".

yellow.

Yep the explosion was inappropriate on numerous news days.

I don't think it can be argued that because of the 1 or 2 days in which a major public figure dies we can not have fresher, more modern titles. In fact in such an incidence (Benazir Bhutto being a recent example) they don't use any titles or music at all.

I do love all these suggestions that the dropping of 24 will somehow cause millions of people to stop watching. What an anagram of carp.

Of course - they'd have to have millions watching in the first place for that to happen! Wink

Sooner or later though I think they will backtrack. Considering they had to with the clock, I'm sure they'll be complaints about this over the next few weeks, and while I don't think they'll backtrack immediately, a few years down the line when the next big rebrand is due they'll be looking away to distinguish the news channel and the news bulletins and avoid confusion - and the brand "News 24" will find itself back on our screens.

Well, I have just seen that video for the first time, and I have to say, the whole thing put together is actually better than I imagined!

The titles are fabulous (very france24 ironically), love the fast-moving visuals and the form-up at the end with the swooshy lines has actually made me like the box Razz

Also love the regional look, much better than the random mix we have at the moment, and also love the sneek peeks we have had at the studio, looks warmer than I expected.

Roll on Monday!

PS - Am I the only one who will be staying up all night? God, I need to get out more Rolling Eyes

Isn't the dropping of "24" and the use of a harmonised brand all to do with the fear of one part of the news service being trimmed in budget cuts?

The use of one brand providing so many different services puts them in a stronger position to argue against such cuts.

I may have misunderstood it somewhere along the way, but if I'm correct then I can't see them reinstating "24" when the reasons for changing it are quite as serious as they are.

I don't mind the new graphics, but it seems they just don't want to get rid of those whooshy sound effects which are annoying and ridiculous in my opinion.

All three main presenters (Kate, George, Huw) are away today - I assume they're doing rehersals in the new studio.

The point is though however valid they may feel they're reasoning is now, a few years down the line it might be a different picture.

For example Grandstand - they had their reasons at the beginning of last year for axing it, but on the BBC Sport blogs in recent months they've talked a few times about looking to bring they're coverage of various Olympic Sports together between the Beijing and London Olympics under one brand.

Well George will be presenting from the same studio on Monday as he's done for months now, and Huw's moving back into a studio that hasn't changed at all as far as the Ten goes. So why?

Nobody's suggesting that, Phil. Of course a change of name won't make people switch off. However, I suspect it will lead to confusion. Many people know it as 'News 24' (presenters, reporters, offscreen staff and the viewing public) and probably won't stop calling it that. It'll just lead to people using BBC News / BBC News 24 / BBC News Channel to identify the one channel. They should just have left it as it was: one clear name.

To get used to new sequences? Just because they're in the same studio doesn't mean they don't need to rehearse. As it stands, they rehearse before every broadcast, despite doing the same programme day-in day-out.

Backtracking over the clock is a different matter.
People used the clock - especially during weekend Breakfast on BBC1 (which was where the main problem started)
The Channel name is much bigger. As explained they've been working on doing this for at least a year.
If people can't see a clock they complain - I would imagine, as long as the service is providing good coverage of news, like it used to, people will not complain about the name. Apart from people, of course on this forum, who I expect will be in contact in their droves!!! Smile
