My family don't watch news channels, unless something big is going on. To them, News 24 means nothing.

Yes, but to be fair I think you're in the minority - everyone I know calls it 'News 24' and I'm sure will continue to do so.

Everyone, including presenters will just call it News 24 and it'll just be the titles that say BBC NEWS, or even the DOG.

What's so wrong with that? It happens every day for at least 6 hours anyway! (Overnight)

By the sound of it it's not just dropping from the titles - the whole name is changing. i.e. Your EPG will say BBC NEWS as opposed to BBC NEWS 24. Plus, autocued presenters will not say BBC NEWS 24 as it will not be on their autocue...

I am aware of that, I am just saying we should give the changes a chance.

What would be good about the channel's title being called one thing and the presenters calling in something else? What would the website be known as, how will the channel be referred to in blogs from the editor for example?

Surely having a mish-mash of names/references wouldn't contribute well to the BBC's ever increasing need for uniformity.

Just leave it as 'BBC News 24' all round - titles, DOG, references, website, EPGs.....

Also, any ideas for the renaming of the following?:

News 24 Tonight
News 24 Sunday
Entertainment 24
Film 24
E24 (which was lauched merely a couple of months ago)

Probably more I've missed...

I mean, sometimes as a designer or decision maker, you need to accept that what's best for the public, may not tally with our own views. I have wanted the 24 gone from the logo and titles, but what they verbally say doesn't interest me too much.

I am not sure if its for the better or not, we'll have to see some time into the new look to see if it has made a positive or negative difference.

So hate it all you want, but you cant say for sure if its a bad decision until its effect has had the chance to be felt.

But how exactly is dropping the '24' the best thing to do for the public? It doesn't make one jot of difference except to weaken the channel's image. Everybody I know calls it 'News 24' - and not just people on this forum. The BBC News Channel sounds completely daft and is just not memorable. In such a competitive world, the BBC really are shooting themselves in the foot. Ten years ago, they managed to come up with a quirky name which summed up the channel. What could be simpler than 'BBC News 24'? It's catchy, memorable and does the job perfectly. Asa hit this one right on the head - the suits are getting annoyed that people constantly drop the 'BBC' and refer to it as 'News 24' and this is just their way of throwing their toys out of the pram. It means absolutely nothing and that's exactly what will be gained from it: zilch. It's change for change's sake.

That last sentence hits the nail on the proverbial head. However, I have rifled through this thread for some time and have not a shred of evidence to indicate that they are changing the name. Until I see it in a reputable source, like Media Guardian , and NOT JUST AS A RUMOUR OR SPECULATION - I refuse to believe it. These 'insiders' can make their claims: but until I can see concrete, undisputable backup for this change (which we may see on the 21st of April when (if?) the new DOG comes into service) I cannot accept it as fact.

And if anyone really would be stupid enough to think people are subconsciously disassociating the BBC with News 24 - it would take a true imbecile to think the news on News 24 was provided by Sky.

nat210790 no Gateway have confirmed that cross-promoters will say "Coverage continues on the BBC News Channel" while presenters on the channel itself will refer to it simply as "BBC News".

Just seen the picture of the new studio. Very nice, dark and sophisticated, but abstract with faint swirling maps from the new titles imposed over it. And a new red and silver oval desk! Very Happy

Oh and BBC World is being renamed BBC World News.

Oh, I can see that sounding great when World News starts.

"Now on BBC World News, World News ".

Jan Ravens and Jon Culshaw would have a field day.

What the hell? Why?

That's it, marketing experts bulldoze through everything because they don't explicitly mention the product. Imagine what they'd do to the iPod, Sky, Microsoft PowerPoint.
