A better solution, if they are intent on "strengthening" the BBC News brand (hmm..) would be to keep the channel name BBC News 24, but brand all of the content as just BBC News.

It would be like BBC World - the channel name is BBC World, but the news content is branded BBC News.

Except News 24 has no ident, just countdown, headlines, titles...

Well the countdown currently ends with 'BBC News 24' - they could keep that. The trailers would all refer to BBC News 24. The channel name on the EPG would be BBC News 24. But the news content would all be BBC News.

I'm not an advocate of this idea, but I think it would be less messy and confusing than cutting out the '24' altogether.

I think the point of this is to remove any seperation between News 24 the channel, and BBC News bulletins.

I think the thinking is, there is only BBC News. BBC News has a mobile, website and interactive service. And BBC One will dip into BBC News for its bulletins. And the regions have a news service provided by BBC News. Oh and BBC World are supplied with 30min updates by BBC News.

Yeah, and all that's great, until you come to the point when you want to promote BBC News as being a channel, and the channel doesn't have a name.

The name of the channel CAN'T be BBC News because BBC News is more than just a 24 hour news channel - it's on other TV channels, radio and online too.

Hmm, if they ensure they reference the BBC One bulletins in a different way from "BBC News" it may work.

"Welcome to the Six O'Clock News, I'm Bill Buckley, tonights main stories..."

"Thats all from us here on the Six O'Clock News, BBC News continues 24 hours a day {cue graphic with channel numbers} but now we join our newsteams across the UK, goodbye..."

Why Martin, do you think they should change it? Because you don't like the logo?

I seem to recall it was reported about a year ago that the '24' was going to be dropped from 'BBC News 24'.

I don't see how anyone can have any problems with the logo. It's hardly messy - indeed the main titles would look bland without the "24", while where it is used elsewhere it's just the case of tagging "24" on the end.

And it's not just for this look too - we've seen dozens of BBC News 24 mocks here over the years with various ideas, and I can't say I've ever thought the extra "24" caused problems or compromised the design.

It's not as if a shorter name helps with presentation - just look at the various messes Sky News have been in over the last few years, and even with this latest revamp the logo still doesn't really fit comfortably on screen.

I've said before I don't see that a huge on screen revamp is required - News 24 have certainly got the best set of astons/ticker/ DOG it's ever had - all very discrete on screen, and all looking rather good. If they were a few years old it might be time to replace them, but I think they've barely been on screen much more than 12 months.

I don't like the number 24 on the titles, its a lie for one as it is not 24 hours at all, but also it makes a mockery of the numbers on the bulletin titles, which show the time of the bulletin (although I would love to see text titles returning and scrap the big numbers).

Also I think it looks stupid in the box, and striped. I don't mind them verbally referring to the channel as News 24 (not BBC News 24) but don't use it in the logo or titles as it looks silly. IMO

With the main BBC branding changing, News 24's on-screen look will have to change also, discreet or not.

I can see a stacked logo being used as a dog, and not striped, and possible in a box, even if it doesn't animate like the old tower TOG. As a stacked logo, BBC News 24 looks rubbish, that's why I want it gone from the logo

When exactly does "News 24" close down? Granted they don't provide continuous coverage all day exclusive to the channel but for (almost) 24 hours a day they provide news from the BBC.

You could argue it that way..

Looking at the website's little box icons, I thought they could be used for box logos, so a quick mock and they look acceptable for me, and I am not a fan of the box logo returning...
