The problem with dropping "24" would be that there's no way of explicitly naming the channel in two seconds: "BBC News" takes longer to say than "News 24". Also, as mentioned, "BBC News" is too generic.
Either way, even the BBC should realise this is disastrous, so I expect someone will be losing their testicles as rts suggested.

Could someone who confirmed this is true please tell us whether the channel's name is changing from BBC News 24 to BBC News, or whether it's just the 24 that is disappearing from on air visual branding?

On GFX can't they drop "ews" from News 24

No-one has confirmed it with sources . Yet.

I sincerely hope no-one does.

Agreed. I'm certain it will have no benefit, in fact a detrimental effect on the brand.

"You're watching BBC News, 24 hours a day, On TV, Online, and On the Go.

They're not going to be mentioning channel numbers and platforms - once you start mentioning the EPG slot or method of viewing for Freesat, Sky, Freeview, Virgin Media, Mobiles, Homechoice/Tiscali IPTV, Online streaming, iPlayer and yet more imminent platforms you'll be halfway through the regional news...

Would certainly be more interesting than the regional news!

So how are they going to do it noggin? Is the name BBC News 24 going?

Is there any source on this, isn't southwales the one that posted a bunch of lies?

southwales correctly told us of the relaunch of BBC News online.

I'm going on peterocket, he's 'an insider' I believe.

It's already made it into the public domain long before it was mentioned on here - just it's not been spotted yet...

Like practically everyone here, I think it's a disastrous idea. I refer to the channel as 'News 24' and will continue to do so. 'BBC News' is too generic; a channel needs a memorable name. Nothing is more memorable than 'News 24'. They're obviously trying to copy Sky News but they're forgetting one major thing - Sky News only have one real platform (well, and Five News but the less said about that, the better) so there's no confusion. This decision by the Beeb is going to lead to all sorts of confusion.

Well if it's in the public domain, perhaps you could point us to where it is?

There is this report at Media Guardian, but it is nearly two years old and claims the changes would take over a year.
