Interesting that Gavin Grey only presented from 10:00 to 13:00 today. It's usually a 10:00 to 16:00 shift on a Saturday isn't it?

Given it's one of the longer shifts - even longer than the current overnight (weekday) simulcasts, which I suspect used to be the longest - perhaps it's two separate shifts worked by a single (otherwise underused) presenter.

Also I'd throw my hat into the 'praising Rajesh Mirchandani' ring... very apt presenter, I thought, and a decent enough reporter. He always seemed to be a fairly high profile news reporter prior to moving to the obviously high profile Los Angeles and Washington briefs, so now he's back in London it wouldn't surprise me if he was groomed as an 'up and coming' host. He'd certainly be a breath of fresh air if added to the weekday NC schedule. I'm really not sure all of the current 'main' weekday presenters on the channel best demonstrates the BBC's strong pool of talent.

Ben Brown just handed back from Beirut to Rajesh Merchandani in London. Rajesh said "Thank you Mate. Go and get some rest - we'll take it from here..."
THANK YOU MATE!!!!!

Adam Parson is back, presenting the weekend news update on BBC1. I assume he'll be presenting the 1-4 this afternoon in place of Maxine.

What time does Martine Croxall's weekend shift finish? Is it 12 am or 1230 am? Any ideas on ratings? Would they be low or high?

The weekend shifts finish at 12:30. And as for the ratings, they'll probably be low.

Well, I've just done some "detective" work, which may suggest otherwise. The Saturday 22:00 shift (w/c 12 Aug) hit 216,000 viewers, and the 23:00 start achieved just over 190,000 viewers. Seems the late shift is a hit for some, which is a surprise. As expected, Nick Owen's Sunday 9 slot hit 422,000 viewers (w/c 12 Aug).

EDIT: Furthermore, isn't the 12-1230 am slot simulcast with world, which will also bump up the collective ratings?

Where are you getting these figures from, out of interest?

Similcasts, even at weekends don't start until 1am, what used to happen on the weekends was the BBC News overnight presenter would do a News 24 bulletin at midnight, only on News 24, then from 1am onwards they would do a BBC News bulletin for both News 24 and World.

This is due to the fact that BBC ONE moved their Ten ish bulletin to 10.30pm while Match of the day was off for the Summer. So viewers looking for their usual bulletin went to the NC and obviously stayed. Sunday Mornings rate very well for the News channel because Breakfast is normally only on the NC from 7.30-9am due to the Match of the Day repeat on BBC ONE.
While during the Summer MOTD is off air and Breakfast is on BBC ONE, some viewers still go to the NC out of habit. Breakfast often gets 500k to 850k on BBC NC on a Sunday when MOTD is on air and this gives a big boost to the 9am hour too.

Yes, they're form BARB. Also, seen as most of the Top Ten are on weekends, wouldn't it be a good idea to drop some of the recorded programmes? I'm sure, for example, that the 20:00-00:30 shift could be done without any recordings, as there would be a 20 minute break with the BBC One News, 2x 15 minute breaks after the edition of The Papers . Of course, Maxine's 10:00-16:00 hours would need a break, and maybe Nick Owens 9-1, so, theoretically, all of the recorded programmes could be put in their slot?
