Mike Embley on GMT. That's a first, I think. Haven't seen Mike on daytime in ages.

I think he recently did GMT on a bank holiday... just cannot remember when.

Also, Karin Giannone presents Impact today. Not too bad, a fresh voice to the show.

he looks more of a bbc world presenter

I will leave aside the lack of punctation or capital letters, but when did it become acceptable to make barely comprehensible statements without any explanation, reasoning or even implied logic? Opinions are rarely of value unless others fan follow them, and then respond. Surely on a forum you want conversation, not this.

As for Pannell, he's actually rather good. His inexperience has perhaps led to any kind of chemistry, tending not to go off script (such as when throwing to the weather). But the interviewing I've seen has been strong - he comes across as actually engaging with the interviewee, rather than sitting waiting to ask the next question (as new presenters often do) - and has a fairly strong delivery. He also didn't have a problem with the breaking news I've just seen.

I also find it interesting how much better the News Channel is when Emily presents in place of Jane, or Adam fills in for Matthew. I like Matthew and Jane each a lot, but I don't think they're a strong pairing. Matthew and Emily are a lot better, because they somehow balance each other more. The same is true of Jane and Adam/Tim.

Martine Croxall would also be a very welcome addition to the weekday schedules.

Ian Pannell presenting on the NC now with Emily Maitlis. First time we've seen this.

He's not too bad. They must be really low on relief presenters, though. But I suppose anything is better than having Gavin Grey on the flagship slot...

EDIT: I totally agree to the above post. I much prefer Emily & Matthew as a pairing. Adam is also good. Have to say, my favourite pairing at the moment is between Matt & Emily and Ben & Joanna.

It was in reply to Jaxfords post above me about him presenting on the News channel (sorry for not adding puncuation!!!)

I'm almost certain it's not the first time he's ever presented on the news channel. I know for certain that he presented on News 24 in the months following the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Between the event and the outbreak of the war in Afghanistan in October 2001, News 24 ran a nightly programme from Washington and Ian Pannell was one of the presenters.

I've a vague memory that he's presented on News 24 from London before - but sadly the 13 years I've been watching the channel are now blurring into one. I think it's unlikely that he's never presented on News 24 having had such a long career with the BBC. Nearly every reporter has had a stint or two on there at some point over the years.

I suppose he may have presented at some point in the past. I wouldn't surprise that much because he is such a first class reporter. But he certainly hasn't presented in recent years.

As a presenter, I haven't found him particularly impressive. There was no connection between him and Emily, although that is understandable seeing they have never presented before together. I am being picky here but he did start reading one of Emily cues by accident, which is quite a basic mistake. I also found him not to be looking at the camera right at the top of the hour and when Emily welcomed us back from the weather it took him a good couple of seconds before he started to read the headlines. I didn't find him that great when dealing with breaking news either. When news came in Emily definitely took the lead when ad-libbing and Ian didn't have all that much to say.

However, during interviews he was very good and seemed to be knowledgeable about the subject matter.

As for presenter pairings, I have to agree with what has been said. When Emily or Adam air presenting, they seem to bring a lot of personality. Jane is okay, but I do find Matthew to be quite a boring character. Also wish Tim was on a bit more. Since relocating to BH he hasn't appeared quite as often. It wasn't all that long ago when I was complaining that he was on too often. But now I seem to wish he was on a bit more often.

I read in Brian Stelter's book recently that when Charles Gibson was paired with Diane Sawyer on GMA, it worked because Gibson focussed Sawyer and she energised him. I think that's what works with Emily and Matthew that doesn't with some of the other pairings - they're a lot more restrained (and in some ways, perhaps, more professional and able to carry a news bulletin) than Maitlis was with Sopel, while the broadcasts don't feel devoid of life in the way it can sometimes when Matthew presents with others.

I almost think of it in terms of percentages. You need to hit 100%, but Jane and Matthew are at 60% each. Few pairings - and I suspect few marriages - actually work where the two people are incredibly similar. In terms of presenters, Simon and Carrie are one of the few where that's actually true, but (if you think of it in terms of percentages) both are excellent at handling news seriously, while both encourage an often dead pan humour at the end. Matthew and Jane don't encourage the lighter moments, Emily and Jon encouraged them too frequently.

Since the move to nBH, Tim appears less, but when he does appear, he presents a lot of shifts in the same amount of time. For example, last week he presented the 630-9 between Thursday and Friday, two national/network/flagship weekend bulletins on Saturday, and the 9-1 slot on Sunday. I have to admit, he is an excellent presenter, but I can't help wonder why the BBC seem to be using Gavin Grey a lot?!!! Does Tim present a lot on world? This would explain why we see him less on domestic broadcasts. Also, still waiting for Ellie Crisell and Sue Thearle to pop up.

Yep, from what I remember, Ellie used to be a regular relief presenter, and she was good as well. She is heavily underused by just presenting the 90 second update.

From other threads I dont think many people liked her style of presenting so that could be a reason
