Yup, it's most likely the Asian audience, when it's broadcast in Singapore, Malaysia, Taipei, Hong Kong, Beijing and Perth at 6-8am. It used to be 7-9am, but somewhere in the middle of the year London's time undergone some Daylight Savings or so, and Newsday becomes synced to 6-8am since then. I can appreciate Alice Baxter on Newsday, compared to her appearance on World Today slot or the other generic bulletins. I think her bubbly character suits Newsday's vibe as the morning show for Asians. Babita does seem a little too serious imo.
I noticed there were some comments about Newsday being too 'bright' or so, but it probably may seem little strange when it's midnight in the other side of the globe watching a morning-oriented program for the other half. Having said that, I do agree with some comments about the delays between the 2 anchors which can be annoying, and some lines they say to close/open the program as well as handing over which sounds cheesy.
Newsday is after all very much the essential news like
TOTH, but a light difference I can think of in that, it features interviews with those located in Asia, particularly S'pore and occasional skype-style interview with people from Australasia. Not sure about this, but Newsday may ocassionally feature some Asian news pieces that would have been ignored were it a TOTH? I also feel that Newsday's news is usually pretty much the same as in the hours preceding it. The next TOTH after Newsday usually has more changes to the headlines.
The American target time slot will definitely be the one prior to Newsday, where World News America is. But in the TOTH after Newsday, the anchors will always mention the Americans in the opening too, in the usual line 'Broadcasting to our viewers on public television in the US and around the globe'.
