I need to stop posting in rota threads, but he's presented World News America before, I believe.
Rajesh Mirchandani presenting on the News Channel this evening. He's rather good. Has he previously done much anchoring? (And are his days as California correspondent over?)

No way. I think people on here don't realise how few watch either the BBC or Sky News Channels on a daily basis in the UK in a normal news week.
Head presenter on BBC London News is a big gig. Ask Emily Maitlis. The 6.30pm bulletin gets 500k -800k depending on the time of year. An hour on the BBC NC during the day and evening is lucky to get 100-130k. Also worth noting that Riz often does the national 7.57pm BBC One bulletin.
"Ask Emily Maitlis" - what's to ask? If it was such a big gig, why would she have left the programme to join NC? I have to disagree with you; presenting on the NC means that the presenter is more likely to present national bulletins, unlike a regional newscaster.
I thought when she left BBC London, it was a joint NC and Newsnight gig? The latter is hardly a low ratings bulletin.
As for Riz Lateef, she also is a regular reporter on Watchdog in addition to being the Friday 7.57pm bulletin presenter, so hardly just a regional name by any means.

Personally I would have thought News Channel presenters would have been more well known than BBC London staff, but there you go!
(Before News 24 started, I would have thought a fair number of presenters would be known from reporting on the 'standalone' bulletins!)

Babita Sharma is covering Outlook on the BBC World Service this week at midday.

I quite enjoyed the "WHO?" that followed the announcement of "And now the BBC News, with Riz Lateef" in our house the other week.

Am I right in thinking that Riz has done some weekday Lunchtime Network bulletins previously?

He presented the Sunday afternoon of the Wimbledon men's final, if I remember correctly his opening line after the headlines was "Well, did you see it?"

Emily does as little as 50 shifts a year on the NC. She only appears to fill out her BBC contract obligations, the same as Gavin Eisler. Her main role is Newsnight, the Nationals and the odd BBC 2 documentary.
BBC London news is a bigger gig than the NC, Emily and Riz prove that. Do you really think that Anita McVeigh, Carrie Gracie or Martine Croxall will have a national job before Riz?
Btw neither BBC london news or London Tonight are typical regional news programmes. They are much higher profile, London Tonight even managed to get Kaplinsky to do cover work.

Nationally a quieter 'WHO' than the BBC News with Martine Croxall/Annita McVeigh would get I imagine.

Martine, really? I'd have thought she'd be one of the best known faces on the news channel now, given she's on in the late evening.

London Tonight got their cheque book out, offered her money, and she did some work for them. It's not complicated.

Nah I doubt that, she started at LT when it was under the old LNN back in 1999. I highly doubt LT are that rich!
