Sadly, Geeta is back tonight on the Papers shift even though Shaun was on the 5. I thought that when Huw isn't on the Five it's either Ben or the Evening presenter so why is Shaun not on the Papers? Is it because they don't trust Geeta on the 5? Hopefully she isn't as bad as yesterday.

She's presented on World for nearly 2 decades - I think she can handle what is essentially a standard news hour with a "funky" name like 'The 5'.

I do think some have gone ever so slightly overboard about Geeta - admittedly I didn't see much of the BBC's coverage on Monday but she's been a regular presenter on BBC World for many years and now some on here are treating are here like she's somebody from Newsbeat just thrown in front of the camera. And she'd have covered all manner of breaking news on BBC World over the years and until this week I hadn't heard anything bad about her breaking news presenting.

Not sure too why Lukwesa Burak is getting so much criticism either - I actually find her an easier watch on BBC News than I did over the last few years on overnights on Sky.

Lukwesa is alright on a newsday with no breaking news

People need to calm down. We all have opinions. I’d hardly call the commentary of Geeta unfair. My thoughts are based on her handling of Notre Dame. She reminded me of Nisha Pillai’s handling of 9/11. Shocking.

True everyone's allowed an opinion but some of the comments about Geeta do seem a bit 'Oh no, they've allowed Geeta to present again' in tone as if one shift suddenly means her presenting has never been any good (which would make you wonder why BBC World have used her for so many years).

I'd hazard a guess that the majority of people using this forum are not familiar with her as a regular presenter of BBC World as she's never/rarely presented on the domestic channel. Unfortunately, the unanimous verdict of people here is that she simply fell to pieces during the coverage of that particular Breaking News story.

I'm surprised they let Andrew Plant return to Points West and BBC West Correspondent as he has always been a good presenter on local news as well as a brief overnight stint on BBC World News, and as a foreign correspondent.

Sean Lay - seriously?
Lukwesa Burak - She is entirely dreadful at breaking news, last weekend being one prime example.

Where on earth are Gosling, Hill, Gracie, Owen, anyone...

Just goes to show that one man's terrible presenter is another's good!

I think Shaun Ley is one of the finest the BBC have - he's just superb. His interviews are intelligent, incisive yet polite, and his coverage of breaking news is second to none as he often brings in such background knowledge to make it flow.

On the other hand, Nick Owen is one of the worst news readers I've ever seen. Far too lightweight, finds everything either amusing, below him or unfathomable and just bumbles his way through.

Have you confused him with Peter Sissons in his News 24 days? Nicholas Owen is one of the few newsreaders who still brings gravitas to a headline sequence, and the last time I watched him he was leagues away from Sissons style bumbling.

Nope. Absolutely no confusion. One of the worst newsreaders I’ve ever seen. Brings no gravitas whatsoever.

OK. I think you're talking tommyrot. That description just seems so different to what I've ever seen him do. Do you have any clips of his lack of gravitas or bumbling?

I could see Nick Owen of Midlands Today being accused of lacking gravitas, but I think that to suggest the same of Nicholas Owen of BBC network news, ex ITN, is very much a minority view.

We certainly don't see him enough on the News Channel these days. He was brilliant on the ITV Lunchtime News and really made it his own with his closing lines.

Absolutely agree.

Rolling News
Nicholas Owen was one of the best and greatest newsreaders on ITV during the 90s and 00s, along with John Suchet, Trevor McDonald and Dermot Murnaghan. He then continued this greatness when he moved to BBC News 24 and took to rolling news like a duck taking to water, as though he'd been doing it his entire life, unlike Peter Sissons who, whilst excellent at fixed bulletins, looked like a lost puppy on News 24.

I can certainly think of far worse newsreaders over the years than Nicholas Owen.

Let's not forget Channel 4 News too.
