Why has Jon Sopel left the News Channel?

I would presume because of his commitments to Global on BBC World, he might pop up the NC once in a blue moon....

He left the news channel back in January time, because Global clashed with his then news channel slot. He has presented the News at One for the past couple of Fridays, so he still presents domestic broadcasts.

I would have thought the news channel would have been more 'prestigious' than a programme on World.

I'd think a 'programme' was more prestigious than any other bulletin or NC hour, the programme is his . News at One may be Sophie's but she doesn't do Mondays so it isn't wholly hers, News at Six may be George's but he doesn't do Fridays etc.

I would agree that a programme would be more important. His old slot, though, was probably the flagship slot, that's always been my view that the 2-5pm slot is the most important (apart from national bulletins/news at five).

News at 1/6/10 do not belong to any one single presenter, yes Raworth and co present them the most, but these bulletins arent 'theirs'. Global was actually launched for Jon Sopel, and has his name in the titles.

You also both seem to be completely forgetting that BBC World News has massively more viewers than any of the domestic programmes.

Also i would bet that 'prestige' was much further down the list of priorities than better Ts&Cs and a bigger salary.

Well Global is like World's version of Newsnight with lots of interviews and debates so it's not just a regular bulletin.

Can't see a mention on here - ITV News' Natalie Pirks is joining the BBC as its new sports correspondent, reporting for all mediums.

Nicholas Owen and Fiona Armstrong together on the news channel this afternoon. How very ITV News.

Jane Hill was also on today but on the 11-2 shift with Ben Brown - did they want Nicholas Owen and Fiona Armstrong to be paired together? And Maxine Mawhinney was on the 8.30 shift with Simon McCoy, another rarity!

Maybe they thought Nick and Fiona would be a better paring, but Ben and Fiona are on at the moment and are actually pretty good!

Simon McCoy anchoring solo this morning. I wonder why they don't have a cover presenter with him........
