I think the last time R2 had one of their mainstream weekday presenters, sitting on for another mainstream weekday presenter was Johnny Walker sitting in for Wogan (about 15 years ago ?)

That did happen a few times, and then when Walker moved off drivetime in 2006, it was announced he'd be the regular stand-in for Wogan.

Vanessa Feltz would often stand in for Jeremy Vine, and they'd find someone else to stand in for Vanessa's early morning show.

Over on 6 Music the regular breakfast stand-ins for Shaun Keaveney were Nemone Metaxas and Craig Charles, both of whom only do weekend shows otherwise. Huw Stephens and Amy Lamé shared the gig over Christmas. I suspect Nemone will continue to stand in for Lauren Laverne when needed.

Nice to see Carrie Gracie back - hopefully she will be able to resume the banter with Simon McCoy at some point.

Because the news is all about the banter.....

Because the news is all about the banter.....

Possibly an unfair comment, as that is not what was implied by any means.

Why is it unfair? The poster was hoping for a quailifed journalist to start some 'banter'.

Because there’s a history of lighter moments with Gracie and McCoy, who nevertheless presented the news professionally. The poster already remarked that it was nice to have the former back reading the news, in presumably a banter-less role, so it just seems an odd comment.
Spencer, London Lite and Jory gave kudos

You're absolutely right, though I was thinking 'mainstream daytime', which is really 7am to 7pm ?

Close. 6am to 7pm generally. Some stations might have slightly different times, but OFCOM recognizes daytime as 6am to 7pm.

For TV maybe but peak for radio must be the morning and evening rush hours as most listening is in cars

Hence why many local radio stations network outside of breakfast and "drive time" and become effectively national networks with presumably (mostly) local adverts between 10-4 and usually after 7pm unless something's happened that they think they should deal with locally, like snowfall or something.
