One of life's mysteries they had the chance to answer during the various rounds of budget cuts from 2015 but probably never will now!

Tina Daheley hosting the Evening News on BBC One.

Is this her first BBC One bulletin she’s fronted?

Unfortunately not. I wonder why they continue to bring a separate presenter in when they use someone so unsuited in terms of tone of voice and delivery style. Annita could have done a much better job of the bulletin.
Edit: as could Babita who is supposedly on World this afternoon.

Tina is brilliant.

BBC One bulletins need to be rehearsed, in terms of reading the script and knowing very well at what points you are sitting down or standing up. It needs to be a professional well polished bulletin. You can’t do that if it’s just hour 3 of a news channel shift and you are reading something for the first time when it appears in front of you.

But the late bulletin is almost always around 10.00pm, which follows a simulcast hour from World... Surely enough time for a pro to rehearse a few moves around a studio and familiarise themself with their lines. It works for the lunchtime bulletin on weekends and over Christmas. Of all the cuts they could make/have made, I'm surprised this isn't one of them.

Other than during major breaking news they have half of each hour to rehearse while the prerecorded back half hour fillers are on and during such breaking news rehearsals would be pointless and also impossible as the studio would be in use. There have also been occasions where the news channel presenter did do the BBC1 bulletin with no noticeable decrease in quality.

Same thing happened on Saturday. Kate Silverton popped up to do a 7 minute BBC One bulletin at 18:10 with no more than 5 stories in it which I'm sure Martine Croxall (who was on the news channel shift at the time) would've managed to do perfectly well. They didn't even run a headline sequence, we just had the titles and Kate standing at the catwalk.

I could understand bringing in a separate presenter for a 30 minute bespoke bulletin, but the weekend BBC One evening bulletins are really no more than summaries (Sunday's ten aside).

I'm waiting for the day when we see what's been done with the BBC News at One and the scheduled BBC One presenter finishing the back half of the Six and Ten slots on the News channel too. That's got to be on the cards sooner or later. I always thought the ITV News channel did this very effectively with the network presenter finishing the back half hour on the ITV NC and saying to the ITV1 audience (although simulcast with the ITV NC) 'I'll be back on the ITV News channel shortly with...'. Demonstrated very well by Nicholas Owen below.

I can definitely see the presenter of the Six staying on for the back half hour and letting the evening NC presenter start at 8. I can't really see it happening with the Ten though as that half hour includes the Papers which I imagine they would want the NC presenter to do.

There's also not the same benefit of reducing shift lengths for NC presenters in the case of the ten as it'll always be partway through the late shift unless the hours of domestic bulletins on the NC was altered. The only reasons for the ten presenter continuing until 11 would be beginning to simulcast with world from 11 or a redesigned NewsNight taking over the 11 hours on the News Channel meaning there would be no reason for a news channel presenter to return to the air after the ten.

This would be problematic if the Six presenter is also doing the Ten. If they don’t come off air till 1900 that only gives three hours before the Ten starts to write scripts, rehearse and take their break. The Six and Ten do have different focuses.

Surely the BBC aren't that desperate for newsreaders that they have to rely on Tina Daheley? There are far, far better presenters in the news talent pool - even in the regions. Wish they'd also get rid of dreary Reeta Chakrabarti who does not change her tone and style when reading the news. Babita Sharma should be seen more - she'd be good on Breakfast as she seems to have a personality.

Babita has actually presented a couple of Sunday Breakfasts this year with Christian Fraser.
