But I don't understand why this is news and why the BBC is reporting about it. It feels very tabloid.

Emily Maitlis is a human being - and a prominent one - entitled to the protections of the criminal justice system. There are suggestions that it has failed her for over 20 years. This is not merely some creep who approached her once or twice outside the BBC or wrote her a vulgar letter or two - this is someone who has loomed large over her life for over two decades and managed to get correspondence to her even while jailed. Justice can sometimes elude even celebrities, so in short, it is news... and news that was even discussed (opposite Newsnight, no less) on the Sky News paper review last night, given its wider-reaching implications.

I thought it was odd that the BBC website headline called her a "star." Makes Newsnight sound like light entertainment.

Agreed that's shoddy wording, especially given the context; it doesn't need to be glitzed up, especially given she's one of their own.

I'm sure Ms Maitlis feels stalking is very real & not at all tabloid.

No but if a story is covered with a lack of sensitivity, and with a degree of showmanship that is not befitting the story, even the most serious story can come across as feeling very tabloid.

As usual Joe Public on social media moaning about the delayed 10. “Why can’t it be on BBC Two?” etc... Seems some people still don’t realise there are 24 hour news channels!

Bit of a joke though, why could Match of the Day not put a strap on the screen ‘Switch over to BBC Two for continuing ccoverage’. Just my opinion, don’t shoot me down.

If they switched the football to BBC Two there would be uproar from those who had set their recorders to record BBC One. You can’t please everyone, sadly.

But at least everyone would have the chance to watch what they wanted that way. This way around it leads to the ludicrous situation of the News and Newsnight being broadcast simultaneously and the probably dropping of the papers and sportsday.

Although in this case it will more likely be the other way round (with the pointless Newsnight repeat being dropped)
