It's nice to see Nicholas Owen doing the national bulletins tonight, he's not on the BBC much at all since his 9am Sunday slot was taken up by Gavin Esler last year.

It's a shame Julia Somerville doesn't still pop up from time to time - she was great on the Saturday bulletins during the temporary "look at how much we care about older women" phase a few years back. Same for Fiona Armstrong.

Is there a reason Katty Kay is in London at the moment?

I think it's a regular arrangement that she comes home to the UK and works out of NBH for a short while each year.

It is a regular one that also brings World News America to NBH for a short spell or have alternates in Washington fill in for her.

Nicholas Owen has the gravitas in his voice that Peter Sissons had, but his presenting style is far snappier. I still reminisce about the days he presented flagship bulletins on ITV on a regular basis.

Watching him as a kid doing the news I actually thought he didn't have the ability to smile. I always found Michael Buerk far less scary.

Indeed. I was sad when Sissons replaced Martin Lewis on the Nine O'Clock News. I'm pretty sure there was a comment from a writer / journalist once, suggesting that some newsreaders read the news like it was on "tablets of stone", and it felt like it was aimed at Sissons. His tone and facial expression hardly ever changed, no matter what the story was about.

I still want Nicholas Owen to do the Six. Only for the comedy Continuity announcement BBC Midlands would need to do name checking both Nick Owens

I don't think BBC Midlands continuity announce both names before the bulletins do they? I'm pretty sure it goes "This is BBC One in the Midlands, now the Six o clock News, followed in half an hour by Midlands Today with X and X". Although I agree it would be amusing.

X and X? Midlands Today is single headed.

Ok my mistake.
I don't actually live in the Midlands so just checked on YouTube and it appears the continuity announcer does introduce the national presenter, followed by the regional presenter.
