Maxine did Dateline yesterday (think it is first shown at 11.30am) and I don't remember her re-appearing after Clive. Maybe, heaven forbid, they let her go home early...

That would make sense considering it's usually the morning presenter (Gavin) who does Dateline during that shift. Makes me think the rota change was for Gavin's convenience rather than the separate Dateline shift having been absorbed into the morning shift as otherwise you'd have expected Nicholas Owen to do it, or for Maxine to have done the morning shift?

Surprising really that if you go back to about 2007 Gavin Esler had almost nothing to do with News 24 anymore (even Dateline was a World production wasn't it?) and has slowly become more closely aligned with it until now all of his regular BBC work, as far as I can tell, is Friday-Sunday on the NC. Quite a demotion compared to being one of 3 or 4 Newsnight presenters, and Chief Presenter of N24 before that? I wonder why he fell from grace with BBC producers when the likes of Martha Kearney and Jeremy Vine moved on to even greater positions from Newsnight? There must surely have been plenty of opportunities to move Gavin to radio (Radio 4 in particular), BBC One or even BBC World News and him remain a higher-profile presenter?

The apparent demotion of Ben Brown has also notable, though Simon McCoy on afternoons with Jane/Emily/Rebecca has made that slot watchable again for the first time since Jon Sopel left. I'm surprised Ben isn't given more BBC 1 slots though if he's lost any regular slot on the NC, when you consider Simon and Jane appear fairly often now and more recently Clive Myrie. And if Ben isn't viewed particularly highly as a presenter by the current crop of editors, I'm surprised he hasn't moved back to reporting which he's arguably better suited to.

A fair few presenters (Ben, Annita McVeigh and Sophie Long for example) appear only sporadically now. Unless their pay has been cut accordingly, it makes you wonder what the point of the longer shifts and fewer presenters is? Combining Dateline London and the News Channel Shift makes sense in terms of economics I guess, given that Chris Eakin left anyway...

Was it not all about Cost cutting? especial since most of these weekend presenters, outside really big stories are only on screen from 00 till 30mins past each hour, with the other 28mins filled with other programmes. So there get breaks etc.

Maxine Mawhinney generally is the stand-in presenter on Dateline when Gavin is away, which usually coincides with the news channel shift she's presenting.

Annita presents the 09:00-13:00 slot Wednesday's to Friday's, with Joanna presenting it on Mondays and Tuesdays and VictoriaLive on Fridays - so it looks like their working weeks have just been cut from four days to three days. As far as I can tell its Julian Worricker, Sophie Long and Ben Brown who have no regular shifts, and Tim Willcox seems to have disappeared entirely (what a change compared to pre-2013...). I suspect at least Long and Worricker, if not Brown too, are freelancers because (as originally reported) they're favouring staff correspondents (Rebecca Jones, Carole Walker, Christian Fraser) over those who were previously the 'main' relief presenters.

Tim Willcox has appeared quite a lot on World lately. He filled in for Philippa Thomas during her recent absence on World News Today and also has presented World News Today and World News on Fridays for quite some time.

As Yalda Hakim is going to be away for 6 weeks, Philippa Thomas will be filling-in on Impact from now through until October, so I'm guessing that Tim will - once more - fill in on World News Today for those six weeks, +/-

Nice to see that Jon Kay is taking the lead on the NC reporting from Shoreham this afternoon.

Julian Worricker also has his BBC World Service obligations, so it's not exactly true to say he has no regular shifts.

Ben Brown has taken on a similar role to Christian Fraser as far as I can tell, which is to remain as a presenter, but also to present from on location when a big story breaks.

Given the longer shifts, I'd imagine that we won't be seeing Clive and Martine doing a full week of evenings any more, so there will be a need for the other presenters to fill those gaps. Martine has also been presenting on BBC World Service lately.

Given that Clive is increasingly presenting the Friday Six/Ten and weekend bulletins, I don't know why they don't put him on weekends and get him to do both...

I was referring to the News Channel itself, rather than the presenter's overall work schedule. Also Ben Brown is meant to be one of the main faces of the channel, unlike Christian who is still a correspondent who fills in as a presenter.

Given that NC presenters regularly present BBC 1 bulletins in addition to NC duties, but never the News Channel in the hours leading up to the BBC 1 bulletin, I'd assume the reason the weekend shifts haven't been merged with BBC 1 shifts is that the network presenter really Is doing something behind the scenes before they appear on air. News Channel prep is usually more general familiarisation with news agenda and preparing for interviews, whereas BBC 1 bulletins involve the presenter actually shaping their scripts and taking part in production meetings etc.

I do wonder how many of the presenters and behind-the-scenes staff are quietly considering their options and looking for openings elsewhere given talk of the NC potentially being axed in its current form. Even Victoria Derbyshire must be worried, considering her show would never secure its funding on BBC Two alone? Unless it's moved to BBC World News. Yes it doesn't fit the remit of a global news channel, but why would that stop them...?

Sophie Long has been doing the 8 quite a lot, presumably covering for Ellie Crissell.

On the face if it the 8 having a sperate presenter looks like an area where cuts can be made, but I suspect they are very involved editorially in writing the bulletin.

Things change.

There are only 4 shifts per day now during the week on the News Channel (9-2, 2-5, 5-6, 6:30-12:00), so whether someone is supposed to be a "main face of a channel" has to change within that, given that three of those are single headed. There are only so many slots to present.

Going on and on about demotions isn't really the right language - roles can and do change to fit the schedule and that's what has happened here.

If you look at what Ben Brown has been doing, he has been out and about far more than before, as I posted above.

I suspect she has bigger problems on her mind before a double mastectomy
