Usually a dedicated presenter, was Fiona Bruce in 2010. Surprised it's her, and not Sophie Raworth or Bruce again. She's good, but not a big name yet

Ah sorry - I haven't been watching many of these (only my second GE). I remember last year they used Kasia Maderia and Mike Embley, as well as Adnan Nawaz. Maybe Fiona Bruce is busy covering for George Alagaih this week? Also, the same article said Sophie Raworth was in charge of a map in NBH colouring in the constituencies as they come in. I agree though in this age of cost cutting, wouldn't it be simpler just to use the studio Sophie is in and have one presenter at NBH instead of two and keeping two studios online with staff?

Last year wasn't a general election.

Sophie is outside, not in a studio.

I'm aware of that but there was still election coverage!

Ah fair enough - I wasn't aware of that from the article. Makes it hard then to have her reading the news as well. I hope she has a dry night!

Reeta's proved to be more than capable fronting news summaries. Remember she was a Political Correspondent before she moved to the Education correspondent role.

A local election is a minor event lead by the news channel, the general election coverage is possibly the most important thing BBC News do, the most flagship of flagship events, using unknown overnight presenters or any sort of cost cutting is not on the agenda.

The BBC Media Centre has an article saying Jon Sopel has been drafted in to act as a correspondent during the UK election coverage and Reeta Chakrabati is giving the news updates throughout the night. Is it new to have a dedicated presenter for this? I thought the 'normal' overnight presenter had this role?

Makes good sense given both their respective political backgrounds, and the role at the party leaders seat he is performing (alongside Andrew Marr and Kamal Ahmad) is always done by a heavyweight. Surpised Kamal, but not Peston, is being drafted in. Also references in the release you refer to to Kirsty Wark, Hugh Pym, Samira Ahmed, Jo Coburn, Richard Bilton, Naga Munchetty, Steph McGovern, Clive Myrie and Branwen Jeffreys being out and about which i don't think had been refeered to before today.

Does Evan Davis have a role on the night?

Isn't Fiona reporting from that constituency in the north east that usually declares hours before anybody else?

Going by the listing I read in the TV Times last night, she is indeed at Sunderland South.

Given that Reeta Chakrabarti has been presenting the three daily flagship BBC one bulletins for some time now, I think we've long gone past the time that she would not be considered capable of handling election night news bulletins.

Indeed-otherwise they wouldn't have given her the big Christmas Day bulletins at the end of last year
