Anyone knows why the overnights shifts are 3 hours long while daytime bulletins usually span 4 hours? I'm basing that on for example Mike Embley's 2am-5am shift is 3 hours and so are Newsday and The World Today. However 8am shifts span until 12pm, which is 4 hours long. Is it because overnights are considered less comfortable timeslots hence the shorter hours?

Just a convenient way of splitting up the schedule, I guess. Weekend overnights (with Adnan Nawaz) are longer than the midweek equivalent, because there is no Newsday at weekends.

So, the "less comfortable timeslot" theory probably doesn't apply.

Mishal Husain presenting BBC World News at the moment, albeit LIVE from Lebanon with a Syria special.

Slightly different theme music played out, which sounded like the News Channel variant with the extra 'jump'.

From a pres point, it is the News Channel music they're using. They did the same thing yesterday as part of special coverage they're doing - I'm not sure if they did it today but yesterday they used the World News Today bed instead of the generic headline bed at the top of the programme.

Actually, you have this the wrong way around. There is only one shift that lasts four hours and that's 08:00-12:00. Every other shift throughout the day on BBC World News is three hours or less (except at weekends).

Rolling Eyes because a presenter simply rolls up, reads the news and leaves... I think they're probably doing (perhaps more than) a full time week... also, some of their shifts at weekends are as many as 7 hours long. So be creful what you wish for.

I think you'll find that dosxuk was actually mocking the fact that these are being referred to as three hour shifts, when they obviously don't turn up, say 'Hello I'm XXX with BBC World News', read some news and then leave again!

Exactly. It's idiotic these conversations about how long people are rota'd on to work and if nights are shorter than days because people are less comfortable working at night when nobody except the people actually in NBH knows when these people are actually starting and finishing work.

Oooh, "as many as 7 hours" Shocked Surprised That's about a third of my shift last saturday, so I'd be quite happy with as many hours as that.

IIRC on one of the Behind the scenes videos, Huw Edwards started his 'shift' at 11am and wasn't finished till about 11pm. On a Newsnight Behind the Scenes Paxo also worked about 12 hours a day. I think some people forget that the presenters do a lot of behind the scenes work as well as presentation.

For clarification - I was merely referring to the broadcast element of the shift and correcting an earlier post.

I'm well aware that considerable work would go into preparing for a news bulletin.

I should probably clarify that I was attempting (and failing) at irony too... I must have misinterpreted dosxuk's post as being 100% serious. Carry on...

Who is presenting the 5am TWT slot with Sally Bundock this morning? I've never seen her present before.
