I don't understand this obsession with the term "scraping the barrel" whenever a new face happens to pop up covering a shift. Geoff Clark is a very acomplished presenter and there is no reason why he can't cover for a few hours. Besides, everyone has to appear for their first time at some point.

I'm sure in the large catalogue of presenters, specifically familiar faces on the News Channel, that have presented on there before, that someone could have at least covered this shift, instead of another unknown face. There have been far too many new faces appearing on the channel of late. What's wrong with using a presenter who is used to presenting on the BBC News Channel?

Geoff Clark has never presented on the News Channel before. Despite being an 'acomplished' presenter, not everyone performs well on live, 24-hour news. It takes some getting used to. Luckily, he comes over well, but I feel someone with more experience presenting on the News Channel could have done this shift with Annita.

I was certainly surprised when I switched on the television too. Truly scraping the barrel in terms of relief presenters. Let's see what next week throws at us in terms of relief.

Blimey he's put a bit of weight on since I last saw him on TV AM!

Why "luckily"?

I think he's fitted in really well. Lots of presenters who are now News Channel regulars haven't got on nearly as well on their first outings. Ben Brown was like a rabbit in the headlights when he first started, but is now "experienced". I think you should judge on the results and stop being so hung up on whether they've presented before.

Can you imagine the BBC, or any broadcaster, putting on a grossly overweight woman in her sixties to read the news? His use just emphasises the fact that the BBC, and especially the BBC News Channel, is still stuck in the rut of a 70s regional broadcasting style... old, unattractive man, young, usually blond pretty girl. Why are there no younger men on the News Channel?

Geoff Clark is absolutely dreadful on the News Channel. Can't bare to watch it at the moment with so many useless presenters.

They really are dredging the bottonm of the barrel! The critical attribute is "credibility" and Ellie Crissell, Sue Thearle and Clark score worse than zero.

What on earth is wrong with any of these presenters?
Just because they are not the regular presenters in a given timeslot does not mean they are rubbish. Credibility; what does that actually mean? In order to tell ne about a typhoon in China the newsreader has to have lived through one and/or reported on one before?

Absolutely nothing wrong with Clark in terms of his presenting.

I know this is TV Forum, but some people are a little too obsessed. There are always going to be people popping up with a presenting style that is probably better suited to other types presenting but at the end of the day if they can read an autocue without stumbling and cover a live event to a sufficient degree that is all that matters. Sure, if they signed someone up on a big regular contract I could understand people coming here to moan but its just a few shifts during summer when less people are watching.

There really isn't any need to dissect and analyse every word I write. In terms of the word "luckily", I mean to say that he comes across fairly well and natural at presenting on the channel, unlike some presenters who have been on in the past.

The Barco panel above his head is very surprised! It's gone all grey. Wink
