And, your newscaster on BBC1 in twenty minutes from now shall be...........Sue Thearle.
Wow, that's suprising! But a step up for Sue!
With this and Martine Croxall presenting the teatime Saturday nationals on two occasions in the last month, I wonder if they're moving towards using the on-duty NC presenter for the weekend bulletins on BBC1, rather than bringing in a separate anchor?
Realistically, Sue Thearle and Martine Croxall are as well known as Joanna Gosling or Clive Myrie by now that I can't see any reason they shouldn't appear on BBC One. If the 'main' News Channel presenters are well enough known to audiences and are senior enough, I can't see why the people who regularly fill in for them on the News Channel aren't well enough known too.
Not that I'm in favour of how random weekends are...
On another note has anyone else seen Stuart Flinders appear as a 'News Correspondent' on the NC quite a bit recently? Reminds me what a shame it was they didn't keep him on as a relief presenter when he was on secondment around 2007/8. My timing might be a little off, but does anyone know if he was effectively covering while Julian Worricker did his round-the-world trip, or were they just testing Stuart out on top of the 'regular' fill-in presenters?
I have to disagree entirely. I think Sue is excellent. She performs well on the News Channel with Breaking News, etc.
However, I respect your opinions.
I believe he meant that it's a step up for Sue in that she only normally does News Channel shifts so doing a more 'prime-time' national bulletin is a step up from what she usually does.
That's exactly what I meant. Sue is a very good presenter in my opinion.
There's far worse presenters who do the teatime bulletins like Ben Brown!
I'm still not sure what they see in him as a newsreader. Brown's an admirable journalist and, from what I've seen, a great reporter. He's also great at presenting on location. But he's not, in my opinion, suited to reading from an autocue or studio-based interviews. Clive Myrie's in a similar position, though his problem is more a lack of chemistry/ good interaction with his co-presenter. I think you've either got 'it' or you've not, and I think Brown and Myrie are like Jeremy Bowen - ultimately best suited to reporting (and best utilised as such).

The first I saw on Stuart on the NC was at the beginning of 2009. They brought him in when Chris Lowe retired as a temporary replacement before they brought in Clive Myrie. I have to agree, I wish they kept him on, he was a good presenter. I don't think he fills in that much on North West Tonight anymore.

I think you have it spot on there House - I do wish they'd try bringing in some of the better NC presenters like Joanna Gosling and Julia Somerville before they go for Clive or Ben. The BBC does work in odd ways though - Jane Hill was once a senior BBC national news presenter, even doing the Six/Ten but now she only does the odd weekend bulletin.
For BBC WORLD as he's a Sue fan and he can't see UK broadcasts - Sue on the bulletin this evening:

A Flinders report has just been aired on BBC One. I remember him appearing on the Channel when it was still in N8, so that's pre-2008, and I'm sure he was on before Lowe retired as when he started doing weekend evenings it was assumed on here they were keeping him on as Lowe's replacement. Shame they didn't really.

She's criminally underused these days as far as I'm concerned. I'm hoping she covers the One more often when the rotas change later this year, but it wouldn't surprise me if she didn't.
