Yeah it would be good to see her on the Bulletins, maybe not the six, there is already George, Fiona, Sophie, Sian, that can be on there, however the News at 1 is what I think aimed at women while the men are at work, that's why women are presenting on the news at 1, Jane would be perfect on the 1 oclock

That's a bit of a strange thing to say. You've not taken into account the fact that many women work and that some men actually stay at home. Also, what about all the retired people of both sexes, students, the unemployed? The list is almost endless. And your comment that the News at One is always presented by women, that's actually only a fairly recent development. From 1986 until 1999 it was actually presented by men more than anyone else (such as Philip Hayton, Martyn Lewis, John Tusa, Ed Stourton, Justin Webb). In fact, it was very rare for the One O'Clock News to be presented by a female. The only one I know I can remember is Jennie Bond. And possibly Jill Dando, but I remember her more on Breakfast News and the Six O'Clock News.

Strange indeed. And frankly, even if it was women who predominately watched (which seems to be based on 1950s generalisations), the idea that women would only watch the news if a female presented is mad. Even just in the last ten years, regular presenters have included George Alagiah, Darren Jordan and (more recently) Simon McCoy.

Yes, I'd forgotten about those more recent ones. George Alagiah and Darren Jordon regularly presented it during the Anna Ford era, and more recently I think Jon Sopel has also presented fairly regularly. I also remember on one or two occasions, Jeremy Bowen and Gavin Esler presented the programme too. Oh, and Michael Buerk also presented it back in the late 80s. So, I'd say it's well and truly stacked in men's favour overall.

And Richard Whitmore led the One's predecessor! There was also Mike Smartt and Justin Webb as oft fill-Ins on the One, not to mention Huw Edwards himself.

Andrew Harvey was another male presenter of the One in the 1990s, along with Laurie Meyer and I believe Chris Lowe. In more recent times, we've also seen Bill Turnbull and, on a couple of occasions, Matthew Amroliwala presenting the bulletin.

Did Peter Sissons or Nicholas Witchell ever present the One?

Yes, Peter Sissons did. Take a look at the documentary "J'Accuse the News" on YouTube. He appears to be presenting the One in it (the giveaway is the inset design; the vertical version was only used on the One; the Six and weekend bulletins used the horizontal version, and the Nine had its own look altogether).

Oh yes, John Humphrys can be added to the list...

Ah, now I can't remember whether Moira actually did present the One O'Clock News. She certainly co-presented its forerunner News After Noon, and she also presented daytime summaries and daytime weekend bulletins on her own, but when it came to the big bulletins like the Six, she always co-presented and to the best of my recollection, never led the programme. She was always paired with someone like Sissons, Ford or Lewis. And at weekends, despite having done the lunchtime and teatime bulletins, she would always be replaced for the late news by Lewis, Witchell, Sissons or Buerk.

For a similar reason I was hesitant about saying Jill Dando earlier. I honestly have no recollection of seeing her present something like the One O'Clock News on her own. I can vividly remember her co-presenting the Six like Moira, and also on weekend bulletins. But my mind's blank when it comes to the One. Hopefully someone might be able to recall better than I can.

I've got similar recollections - I don't have any memories of Moira or Jill presenting the One O'Clock News - just co-presenting the Six.

It's just that I'm sure I've read before that Moira has presented every TV bulletin on the BBC apart from the Ten O' Clock News, which made me think that she also presented the One in the 1980s/90s. She definitely presented News After Noon, the predecessor to the One, as there's a clip of her on TV Ark of her doing so.

Did she ever present the Nine, in the absence of Sissons/Buerk, or co-present Breakfast News?

Yep, there's a clip lurking somewhere of her presenting the Nine with Martyn Lewis during the "Flying Fish Finger" era.

That was because, after the 1988 revamp of the Nine O'Clock News, they wanted to get the senior anchors - Buerk and Lewis up to 1994, than Buerk and Sissons - doing the main bulletin seven days a week, so someone like Moira Stuart or Chris Lowe would do all the bulletins at the weekend before the flagship bulletin had its own presenter. I can't remember when they stopped doing that, presumably around the start of the noughties because I think it had certainly stopped when Huw Edwards and Fiona Bruce became the senior figures.

Before 1988, though, the same presenter would do all the day's bulletins at the weekend so Moira certainly did plenty of Saturday and Sunday night bulletins on her own, she was more or less the main weekend presenter in 1987-88, after the departure of Jan Leeming. I'm thinking that when they said she'd presented every bulletin apart from the Ten O'Clock News, however, they probably counted News After Noon as the One O'Clock News.

Apparently in 1989 Moira presented an edition of Breakfast Time with Chris Lowe
