Also I think Gavin's comparisons to what happened to Jill Dando were bang out of order and quite frankly shameful - how do they compare???

At the same time, many of the comments made on here about presenters seem very creepy and unnecessary and have no place here, or for that matter in public.

Well my Dando comment was a rather pointed response to your second point.

Distasteful? Yes. Whatever you might think of me, I assure you that's not commonly my style, but it was helpful to illustrate the point about obsessive fanatics - which lately some members have begun to stray towards.

I've been a poster here for 8 years. I'm confident that I have a firm grip of what's proper to discuss, and that type of topic that is better served by the vile and morally bankrupt Digital Spy forums.

Please don't confuse my sense of decency and outrage with some childish squabbling.

I don't want to take sides, as I am partly in favour of both sides, but please can we end this over-egged argument and get back to discussing presentation/ presenter talk respectively? Smile

That's all very well and good but the problem arises when members who solely discuss presenters and rotas take over the normal presentation discussion, even though for BBC News there is a separate thread. Even if a dedicated presenter/rota thread were to be created for each outlet, this would still occur. Members can be having a lively, interesting discussion about presentation when a rota member will enter the wrong thread and post something inane. That usually ends up strangling all the life out of the more interesting presentation discussion and we end up back at square one. I'm all for presenter/rota talk being separated off but it has to be adhered to in order for it to work and keep everyone happy.

Gavin, I just thought your comment on Jill Dando was unnecessary and "distasteful" - just didn't think your argument was boosted in any way by referring to her!

I'm not - I'm just aware that these sort of debates have taken place before on many occasions and rarely got to any real solution (excluding the one that ended up with the creation of this thread).

Like I've said, none of what I've said is specifically at any one in particular (other than your Jill Dando comment Wink) and I just want peace so we can go back to discussing about tv presentation (or presenters) rather than arguing over how we discuss it!

Itsrobert, I too am aware that many people still use the main BBC News Channel forum (or as I pointed out BBC Breakfast) to discuss presenters, as opposed to using this one. Could a happier solution be to create a separate subforum under 'The Newsroom' for this talk, therefore completely moving presenter discussion away from the presentation discussion? Not ideal admittedly, but one option.

I also think moderators maybe need (at their discretion) to take a stricter tone on when they do discuss presenters in presentation forums***. A new member joins and perhaps doesn't realise the rules, that's fine, they weren't to know. Someone clicks on the wrong one in a moment of blindness, that's fine, for a one off. People who continue to discuss in there, or those who choose to reply, should really be reminded of this topic as this is the only way preventing it. And in response to those saying it should be banned full stop - you're left with the same problem of rules being ignored!

At the same time, there have been members who have replied to this thread (or the old one) simply complaining that presenter talk is taking place - what happened to compromise?

Oh and talking about this specific debate, could we not all calm down and put our arguments in non-snide, non ambush-style discussions? What does criticising what others say, or what they may (though by you're own admission you have no proof) say in the past, have to do with presenter/ presentation discussion?

Many thanks for putting up with my long-winded posts!

***Mods, this isn't a criticism on you or you're policies or decisions, simply spouting options/ solutions!

How old are you Gavin? I mean, are you not spouting the traits you possess yourself. It's rather concerning that a comment I made about whether someone looked pregnant or not has turned into you accusing and abusing me to an extent I find repulsive. Since when does referencing someone's attire and asking a question make someone a creep, weirdo and stalker.. I mean, how dare you reference Jill Dando.

You need to have a good think about your posts before posting them. (EDIT)

There's nothing wrong with what I write. YOU are the one who needs to think before he posts.

And if you don't like the Jill Dando reference, then stick to the remit of the forum, and don't pry into the private lives of professionals. Would you like to offer an explanation regarding what the hell a pregnancy has got to do with you?

Well?

And forgive me, Charlie, there's nothing "accidental" about Newsroom's line of questioning - its just sheer prying. Nothing less.

Gavin, I don,t mind being called weird. After all who is the best judge of what is normal?

And where I live , we have to pay to receive BBC World News, in addition to the annual Licence fee which goes to our government.

In which case I can only assume that the point Gav was trying to make has gone straight over your head.

Does anyone else think Chris Rogers in looking a bit wide eyed on the nightshift? Perhaps he might be pregnant?

Oh no I understood completely what he meant and implied, but given someone was only asking if she was pregnant it's taking it way too far to compare it to the murder of Jill Dando! He was making his point clear enough without that reference as far as I'm concerned.

And lol at Hyma.

Incredible. As I've said before these sort of pathetic debates on semantics / punctuation / what's posted make this site a laughing nerd stock. It detracts totally away from being a fun, sometimes informative blog. If you disagree with something someone says, discuss it. If you don't care for a post, ignore it. These past three pages of bitch slapping is truly pathetic.

Right so on this "blog" we should discuss if we disagree with a post, but if we disagree with a post we should ignore it. Excellent. I can understand now why you make an average of 17 posts a year, it's QUALITY you stand for.

"Semantics and punctuation"?

Well you've demonstrated a clear grasp of what was being discussed, I see.
