Bit odd to see Julian Worricker at this time in a morning! Can't recall him ever being on this early before. Prefer Simon with Carrie though..

Simon's at Buckingham Palace this morning which is why Julian is covering with Martine. Julian has definitely presented this shift before but it is rare that he does.

I knew newsreaders like to flick and re-arrange their scripts and papers, but Sue Thearle has been doing it to a very annoying level this morning, like I've never seen before. She was moving them around incessantly despite not even talking and when she did she just read out part of a statement. I still don't like her being on the NC - she should just stick to sport. She just lacks the authority and finesse of, say, Jane Hill who is usually paired with Matthew Amroliwala. She also loves to move around the mouse and she appeared to smirk before the latest on the fallout from the Syrian massacre in Houla. I know it's been pedantic, but it just doesn't look very professional and it's needless. Most presenters can move scripts and look ahead at stories on the computer seemlessly and without the attention that she is attracting.

Also, Jenny Culshaw's intonation on the Sport is very annoying. She puts emphasis on all of the wrong words. It just sounds wrong! She's been doing it since the beginning of sport from Salford, and I've got to boiling point. Have to say, the best of the new sports team in Salford so far for me are Katherine Bownes and Katie Gornall - both very natural.

Sophie Long with the 8pm update. Can they get rid of Ellie Crisell now to make this minute of TV so much better?

I agree with you there, aconnell. Maybe it's just nerves? I've also noticed that she has a tendency to smile every single time after she's read a story and is about to link into the report, even the hard-hitting items, such as the situation in Syria. Makes her look a bit lightweight, IMO. I do like her, and seems a very affable person, but like you say lacks the authority of someone like Jane Hill or Carrie Gracie. Hopefully she'll improve in time, but I think she's far more suited to sports presenting/reporting for the time being.

Whoosh! Tim's back on World for his second shift of the day: World News Today.

Tim Willcox? Second shift of the day?? On a Friday??? Never! OMG, that man works *so* hard! Wink

Nick Bryant making his first appearance on BBC World since becoming freelance. He's reporting LIVE from Bali on the drugs case.

Has he appeared on Network before?

Carole Walker currently on BBC News Channel. Sigh. (Also using awful backdrop on BARCOs, but that's obviously for another thread, and debate at that!)

Really don't rate Carole Walker as a presenter. She's not terrible, but she's not that great either! Should really stick to reporting, which she's better at in my opinion. Why can't they use Karin Giannone or Kasia Madera when the more senior NC presenters are away? They are much better relief presenters!
