If they are going to make the evenings single headed Jon Sopel would be far better than Ben Brown at presenting them. The banter between him and Steve Evans just now has been very amusing. Sophie Long, trying to join in at the end just sounded like a fish out of water.

I think Joanna should present the shift alone. Then Jon and Sophie can remain at 2pm. Ben's regularly switching around/absent so he could just be a relief.
And she's back. Carrie Gracie makes her return with Simon! Great to see her back! The reaction on Twitter from Simon's really touching tweets just shows how admired she is in the BBC. A real inspiration and something to celebrate today.

Did the BBC really need to send Chris Eakin, James Pierce and another sports presenter whose just popped up from Athens during the six to cover the Olympic torch handover? Surely James Pierce could have managed it solo?

To be fair David Bond (the one on the 6) interviewed the Princess Royal so who's to say (for example) that while he was conducting that interview, Chris Eakin was presenting on the news channel and James Pierce was compiling a report for the 1 or 5 Live or whatever.
Without knowing exactly who had responsibility for what, you can't just say "oh surely x could have done the job on their own". I'm that sure in these times of tight purse strings on the budget, the BBC will have handled this (and all other) planned news events in the most cost effective way possible.
Why don't you just write to Newswatch, join their "why send a presenter to the location" brigade and have done with it?

Absolutely wonderful to see Carrie Gracie back on screen, looking so bright and confident and well as though she'd never been away. Fantastic presenter, and deserves much more exposure on the BBC (if of course, she wanted more exposure). As has been mentioned before, Simon & Carrie should cover Breakfast in Salford one Sunday - which would be amazing.
Much as we all know the pair would be great on breakfast I can't see either of them going to Salford regularly, especially for a weekend edition. Does anyone actually think Sunday breakfast is a more senior role than a regular weekday main slot on the news channel?
