Anyone know what's happened to Carrie Gracie? I can't remember the last time she presented on the News Channel?

She's been ill since September - her co-presenter Simon McCoy has said on his Twitter that she is fine, her operation went well and the latest news is that she should be back by the end of May.

Third presenter in as many days on The Hub on BBC World. Nik Gowing away again? I know people need to be away for whatever reason, but a different replacement every day! It must be a much sought after slot.

Although I do like Peter Dobbie and Karin G when they're on.

Thought it was nice to see Jane Hill back on the News Channel this morning after what seemed like forever! And, of course, Sian Williams on the One.

Haha, I know - Nik certainly doesn't spend much time on air these days. I think it's probably because he does a lot of moderating and public speaking, which undoubtedly takes up a lot of his time. Looking into what Nisha Pillai is doing these days, it seems she's got into that line of work too. Interestingly, Keshini Navaratnam runs a media consultancy business now.

Anyway, it is nice to get a mixture of presenters on World - it keeps things interesting. We've had Karin and Lyse earlier this afternoon, which was nice. Lyse is definitely the Queen of BBC World. Other rivals would be Zeinab and Martine D. I think Lyse is top of the pops though Smile

Watching Aaron on WBR earlier - is it me or has he become the Richard Quest of BBC World?! Very charismatic and lively presenter. I know he was always a bit that way from when he started on the channel way back in 2002 but he seems even more enthusiastic now... if that's even possible!!

Just watching The Hub now - does anyone know if the presenter has a stool/chair to sit on during reports? 90 minutes seems like an awfully long time to stand in one spot. Unless they go to the main desk?

Nik has been using the edge of the main desk for a couple of live interviews last week. Nice break in the standing mode. The standing versus sitting scenario seems to vary from presenter to presenter. Peter Dobbie sat one day last week, but maybe tired from his grueling Marathon des Sables the week before. LOL.

Nik, Tim and Karin usually stand!

Not sure if they have a hammock to Kip in, in between reports. Don't think so.

Aaron Heslehurst: sponsored by Sanatogen, I think.

Keshini and Nisha: knew about the latter, but not the former. Across all time, Nisha is by far my favorite World presenter ever. Have always liked her style.

Haha, well if there's no hammock then no wonder Mr Gowing had chocolate issues the other week - he obviously needed a quick fix to keep him awake. Seriously, though, I wish they'd dispense with the standing up presentation on The Hub. It doesn't add anything and making probably their oldest and most senior presenter routinely stand up for 90 minutes isn't very fair! In my job I have to stand up for several hours so I know how tiring it can be, and I get to walk around frequently.

BTW, I heard on the grapevine that Ms Doucet isn't a fan of the current N8 at all. Look how much happier she was in N9:

(Discovered when hunting through an old hard disk drive for old BBC clips)

As for Nisha, yes I liked her too. There have been some excellent presenters on World over the years; they've certainly had more good ones than bad. Another favourite of mine was David Jessel. Very authoritative indeed.

Hahaha. I think Lyse likes N8 in small dozes only, preferring to be out on the road or on a Cairo rooftop, or other such place. As she herself jokes, endures the "full slap" make up required by N8 lighting! Good job they don't have me on as a presenter. Not enough polyfilla in the world for that day!

Nik seems to enjoy standing up, to be honest. (what a bizarre statement to make on a public forum!) I think if he wanted to sit on the stool, he could do. He used to do so.

Not for this particular thread, but I feel that World could do with a big, solid daily newscast which is an hour long, in depth and double headed. Having the likes of Nik Gowing and Lyse Doucet presenting side by side would make it a show to be reckoned with, IMO. Not commercially viable, I would imagine.

I agree, James. Didn't they do something similar a few years back? If memory serves it was David Eades and Lucy Hockings in the morning. However, I agree that such a programme is needed and would be unmissable if it was hosted by two heavyweights like Nik & Lyse. At the moment, whilst the likes of GMT, Impact, The Hub and WNT do last around 90 minutes each, it's effectively the same 30 minutes of material repeated 3 times. A programme that's like an hour of the News Channel with two presenters, business, sport, weather, features etc would be ideal for BBC World. Kinda like what The World Today used to be during the flags era.

Yes David Eades would do 8-11 and Lucy Hockings would do 10-12 and another bulletin either 1300 or 1500.

Not sure when they started doing it, but it ceased in January 2010 when they rebranded all the World News Todays as GMT/Impact/The Hub. However Lucy Hocking was gone for quite a few months around then so It may have stopped before that.
