Sad to hear Chris has retired! Anyone else suspect we might not get a permanent replacement? The rest of the weekend slots seem to be more 'regular' than 'permanent' in terms of presenters, and what with the beeb economising I could see it become either a one presenter slot or random people!

I can't see why the network presenter couldn't co-host at 7, 8 and 9 on weekends since the early evening news is usually before then and the late evening news at 9.30 at the earliest. Then the news channel presenter could do 10 and 11 solo. Would cut down on costs

Yeah, he was a good bloke and will be missed. Any idea of his replacement.

He will be missed. Very nice bloke, and very safe pair of hands. Pleasure to watch and to work with.

Fantastic. What a lovely gesture. He'll be missed by everyone - a happy retirement to him!

FYI regular weekend stand-ins for Chris are Tim Willcox, Adam Parsons and Stuart Flinders.

I'd suspect that this is the perfect opportunity to tidy things up at weekends with the national bulletins / presenters. There isn't really a requirement to be double headed in the evenings either...

Do you think it is likely Stuart Flinders will be made permanent? He has presented with Annita McVeigh several times in the past, so perhaps they could be coupled together.

Well it's been interesting tonight (Mon 5th Jan). Maxine Mawhinney (sp?) has been solo on the early evening stint from 7-9.30pm. Chris Eakin took over at 9.30pm with the usual World Headlines in N8. I pressume he will be back after the 10 to complete his shift. Is this a new thing to be solo weekday evenings? Sorry if i have missed something and it's all been talked about before.

Normally, we have two presenters covering the 6:30-9:30pm slot. When BBC News returns at 9:30pm, of course they are in N8. What happens here is that one of the presenters doing the slot before (6:30-9:30) just reads the news alone for the 30 minutes before the 10. After the 10, it is the first of the overnight staff in N6 until 1:00am. 9/10 it's normally Chris Eakin who does that shift.

Yes i saw this, at first i thought someone had just made a mistake on the strap (wasn't fully watching) but then realised it was her being the spokeswomen and not the journalist.

Has anyone else got any reporters in Gaza itself? The BBC have their producer there who's doing increasing amounts of reporting.

Strange why they can't get more press in there. They say Israel won't let them in, but Gaza has a land border with Egypt, and also a long coast line, so why can't they just cross from Egypt, or even get in a dinghy!!!

I'm guessing Israel probably has a close eye on everything entering & leaving the strip. Isn't crossing a closed border also slightly illegal?

What's the border between Gaza and Egypt got to do with Israel. Thought they'd handed control of Gaza over to the Palestinian Authority.
