Maybe he knows more about space? (they're covering the shuttle landing)

or they need to cleverly do the change over of presenters without disrupting the coverage

Has a replacement as CPC been announced yet by the BBC? There would be strong competition for that position.

Norman Smith, I believe. Currently works mainly for R4.

Mishal Husain doing Newsnight later tonight? Doesn't Emily Maitlis appear any more?

Emily does still appear but she is only the main relief presenter, so doesn't present as much as Jeremy, Kirsty or Gavin. I think Emily may be on holiday this week, as she hasn't been on the News channel either, and Mishal is also down to present Newsnight tomorrow. Mishal does seem to be presenting Newsnight more and more these days though.

I think Emily was due to present Newsnight last Friday but couldn't because the whole programme was cancelled due to the NUJ strike, and she wrote on Twitter that she was disappointed because it was the same day as Rebekah Brooks resigned. She presented the Friday before though, IIRC.

A look at Emily Maitlis' Twitter feed indicates that she seems to be in the US doing another documentary, akin to her previous Trump one, possibly on Facebook or Social Media. Her comment re last Friday's Newsnight I believe was rhetorical.

She's one of the four main presenters - let's not underplay that. She may be contracted for fewer shifts on Newsnight overall than Jeremy, Kirsty or Gavin, but is nevertheless one of the main presenters. Equally no-one but Jeremy has fixed patterns on Newsnight, with Kirsty and Gavin both appearing at various times.

What's more interesting is that Gavin Esler was clearly in working and in London today if he was on the Five. If you believe the papers, Gavin isn't a hugely popular presenter at the moment on the programme. It could be he wasn't available tonight and tomorrow night, but like previously said Newsnight producers do seem to view Mishal Husain quite highly.

For what its worth, I quite like Mishal. She seems a clever individual who interviews guests well insightful questions - something necessary for Newsnight. But most of all, she does it in a calm, professional manor - something other guest hosts of late have lacked.

Do we know when Norman Smith begins?

Philippa Thomas was back on BBC World this morning, albeit not presenting from the studio. She was filing a report from Buckingham Palace, of all places.

First time I've seen her on screen for several months. I gather she's been studying at Harvard or somewhere for the last long while.

I wonder if she will get involved in WNA again in the near future?
