A rare male double-up tonight

Ben Brown and Julian Worricker

Was I the only one who found this weird last night, two male presenters presenting together on the BBC News Channel?

Apart from when major breaking news occurs, how often does this kind of thing happen? I know it happens quite regularly with female presenters

I did. Two female presenters looks definitely better for me... Very Happy

It might seem trivial to some, but Olly Foster is reading sports news tonight without a tie on tonight. I can't imagine it's a new policy as everyone else has worn ties today, but equally you'd think he could have borrowed one. The top button's also undone. Unless there's a personal reason, it seems like an choice for a BBC news presenter.

News 24 going back to its roots, then. I remember when News 24 started, the male newsreaders had a more casual look than their network counterparts. However, as I recall they did wear ties; it was just jackets they abandoned. It didn't last too long though.

When Dan Walker used to always present the Friday Sportsday in the News 24 days, he never wore a tie - some segments always had a slightly more casual presentation style.

Ah yes, but I'm talking about back in 1997. I'm sure they wore ties then, just no jackets.

That's very true - casual but still quite smart.

And @nat210790, I wonder why Friday Sportsday is treated so differently?

They often wore waistcoats.

Ah that's right! I remember Matthew Amroliwala wearing a waistcoat! Can anyone remember how long that lasted? Was it until the 1999 revamp? Somehow it didn't seem that long.

Here's a clip of Matthew Amroliwala wearing a very brightly-coloured waistcoat on News 24 back in June 1998:

Somehow can't imagine male newsreaders dressing like that on the modern day BBC News Channel!

Thanks for that clip. What's the kerfuffle going on behind Mary Rhodes, though? Someone doing a "we are not worthy" motion.

Hope the waistcoats don't make a comeback.

Maybe they need to make the female presenters wear ties too - equality and all that.
