Ben Thompson is based here at the BBC World office in Dubai (which, incidentally, is just thirty seconds walk from my house, if anyone's interested!!)

I am quite interested. Coming out to Dubai next year to visit pals.

Drinks on you?

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!! Yessssssssssssssssssssss!! Yesssssssssssssssss!!

(half pint cider only).

Maryam Moshiri is over here on World today, so I guess Ben Thompson is taking her place on News 24? Also, on the subject of Business Presenters, Juliana Liu is also now stationed at New York Stock Exchange. Who is missing from action, necessitating her to be there instead of in Singapore? Michelle Fleury and Caroline Hepker are still on screen, IIRC.

Ben Brown on 2-5 this afternoon, with Sophie Long.

He was on his normal shift of 7-10 last night, anybody know why he doesn't have any regular hours anymore? I'm sure I've seen him pop up on 11-2 as well before Confused

As widely predicted, George is doing the Ten, which explains why Zeinab was covering GMT

She's better than George anyway. LOL. Why not have Zeinab do the Ten and WNT? Their more closely timed than GMT and WNT??

James! Shame on you for suggesting something so logical! Don't you realise that if we saw a presenter on a news programme we're not used to seeing them on, we'd switch off in droves?! Laughing

Matthew and Jon regularly end up covering his evening shifts with Joanna. Perhaps he doesn't like evenings, does public speaking or the hours aren't convenient?

Really, Rob? So, half the nation would switch off BBC Ten if Zeinab was at the desk? Good Lord. What a pavlova!

But that suggests that as long as it's a familiar face, we would not switch off, meaning that perhaps the Ten should be presented by Holly Willoughby or Paul Ogrady?

Now, there's a thought.........................hmmm.

I think they should bring back Sissons or Buerk or Kendall or Whitmore. The Nine o'Clock News has never been the same since they left. Wink

Lol. The BBC have this crazy idea that viewers will switch off if the BBC1 News isn't presented by somebody familiar. It's why they bring in a separate presenter at the weekend for BBC1 when the on duty News Channel presenter could easily do it.

They also believe that 6 seconds of music at the end of a news bulletin will make the nation switch channels Rolling Eyes Funny...ITV and C4 News seem to do alright with closing music.

Maybe because the main BBC1 bulletins are now simulcast on the News Channel that closing music at the end of each bulletin would look rather odd on the latter

The closing music is happily used on the late Saturday bulletin though - think that is the only bulletin which isn't followed by regional news.

The closing music on BBC1 news bulletins was dropped in c. 2004, well before the decision to simulcast with News 24. Before then, the closing music would play, followed by one or two trails, then into the regional news with an ident. The only exception was the Ten O'Clock News which had the regional news incorporated. Sissons/Buerk would hand over to the regions at 10:25pm before returning with a headlines recap and then closing the programme properly.

The reason given for dropping the closing theme was because it was said too many people switched over between the national and regional news. Fair enough, dropping the trails in between makes sense, but there's no reason why the national news couldn't close with a blast of theme music before cutting straight into the regional news. Most of the ITV regions do so before the Evening News at 6:30pm. I've always thought the national presenter handing over to the regions looks messy; it would look far more professional with a proper closing sequence.
