I can't understand why the overnight shift is considered such a demotion. She's gone from presenting Working Lunch with declining viewing figures to presenting Breakfast and the news on the BBC's international news channel. Just because it's on in the dead of night here, doesn't mean it's not watched anywhere. One or two of the overnights are on PBS in America, too.
But they didn't pick a less senior presenter for Working Lunch because of its falling popularity - they picked one they viewed had high value to try to turn around that decline.
My point has nothing to do with whether the overnight shift is important, but rather when you look at the other presenters who host that slot they aren't as senior as Naga Munchetty seems to be - Martine Croxall, Deborah Mackenzie, Kasia Madera, Juliet Dunlop, Babita Sharma and James Dagwell have never hosted a shift more senior than a NC relief presenter - certainly not the BBC's flagship morning news and current affairs programme.
If Naga was appearing mostly during the day on the NC I wouldn't be saying this, but I find it odd that Naga doesn't seem to appear on shifts in the same way other senior presenters do.
For me, I suspect they've axed Working Lunch but not wanted to lose either presenter at a time when they have few openings, so are putting Naga on what ever spare shift they can.
